Alumni Federation President's Welcome
Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends:
It is with honor that I serve as your 2010-2011 President of Northern Virginia Community College's Alumni Federation Board of Governors. I look forward to being able to give back to the NOVA community and the privilege to work with a fantastic group of individuals who make up this year’s Board.
NOVA offers classes in more than 100 degree and certificate programs that enable students to attain their educational and career goals. I can attest to the academic excellence that NOVA has to offer all of their students, as well as the many scholarships that aid scholars to develop and achieve their educational goals.
When I first came to NOVA, I had just gained my GED at the age of 35 and within the next four years earned an A.A. and an A.S., as well as admittance into The George Washington University with an academic scholarship. I completed my B.A. and M.A. as a history major and I am currently an adjunct faculty member at the Annandale Campus. I plan on completing my Ph.D. and publishing my research into early American women. None of these goals were thinkable when I first arrived at NOVA. I owe my academic success to the lessons I learned as a NOVA student, and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to show my gratitude by working with the Alumni Board.
The Alumni Board members have the opportunity to aid NOVA students with annual scholarships. In addition, we participate in acknowledging academic success by assisting with the Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges reception and giving out token of appreciation to each scholar at graduation.
One of the highlights of the school year for the NVCC Alumni Board is our Faculty of the Year reception. Students and alumni are given an opportunity to nominate an outstanding professor who helped them reach their goals or even changed their lives. Each nominee is recognized at the event and a winner is selected for each campus, as well as one adjunct faculty member.
My hope for this school year is to boost participation into the Alumni Board. We welcome past and current students (you only need 30 completed credits) to help us give back to a college that has given so much to the students and the community around us. We are looking for your unique skills and talents to enhance our group’s ability to serve.
