Alumni Federation President's Welcome

Ian PattersonDear NOVA Alumni and Friends:

After several years serving as a member of the Northern Virginia Community College Alumni Federation Board of Governors I am honored to have the privilege of serving as your president.

Northern Virginia Community College is a unique institution offering its students a quality of education, facilities, and opportunities often reserved for traditional four-year universities. We have fantastic faculty, many of whom perform above and beyond expectations. This past spring students nominated 96 of our faculty for the prestigious Faculty of the Year Award. We have gone beyond the traditional community college structure that focuses entirely on classroom space and have developed spaces on our campuses for students to socialize between classes.

The Student Activities Department has a game room, NOVA Day to help our students relax, an international festival for cultural enrichment, and the Student Excellence Achievement and Leadership Awards to honor the many individuals who continually demonstrate what motivated students can do. Also, a Northern Virginia Community College student has received the Jack Kent Cook scholarship six out of the last seven years. Rather than taking a break to admire our achievements, NOVA continues to break the mold of the traditional community college.

Additionally, the Alumni Federation Board of Governors offers annual alumni scholarships for NOVA students and we volunteer at events such as the NOVA 5K Fun Walk/Run and we also volunteer at the spring commencement ceremony. One of our goals has been to increase membership so that we can take on more fundraising and volunteering activities. Did you know that you can serve on the board even before you graduate? Think about how that will look on a university application. Anyone who has completed 30 credits at NOVA may become a member of the board.

If you are interested in joining the board or would like to attend a board meeting, please contact Bonnie Idle at 703.323.3749 or at bidle@nvcc.edu.
