A. INTRODUCTION:

This course is designed for those students interested in mastering the basic skills of downhill skiing and applying this knowledge for future improvement in downhill skiing. You may also learn the basic skills of snow boarding.

B. COURSE OBJECTIVE/EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME:

1. To introduce individual skills in snow skiing.
2. To learn background & knowledge pertaining to skiing, equipment,
terminology and safety rules
3. To develop higher level of fitness through downhill skiing.
4. To gain positive attitude and appreciation for skiing as a lifetime sport.

C. REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE

1. You must register for PED 181 or 182-97A and attend orientation for the class. Watch the skiing video and submit a written summary of what you learned.

2. Three days of skiing are required.

3. You will be evaluated on actively participating in 3 lessons worth 40% of your total grade. Have your ski instructor sign your note card before each lesson. You will be required to ski an additional 4 hours per day for three days, worth 30% of the grade. Plan to rest after each 11/2-2 hours of skiing.

4. You are required to list the skills you can presently perform and those you accomplish during the class. Evaluate what you learned at each lesson on the forms provided. Return them to the instructor after the last class to get total points for skiing.

5. Anyone who cannot participate all three days due to illness or injury will be requested to make up the class at another time on your own or have points deducted. You would receive an “Incomplete” for the course. Make ups must be completed by the end of February. You may make up1 class.

6. If you have an injury or other physical limitations that the instructor should be aware of, please indicate this on the medical form and inform the instructor before you participate in this class.

7. Complete a waiver of liability form.

8. If we cannot ski on the day of one of the regularly scheduled classes due to lack of snow, we would reschedule for February 14, 2004. The resort must be closed to cancel class.

9. Take a written exam in the Alexandria Campus testing centre, in February. Call 845-6336 for hours. You may take the exam at lunchtime the third day at the slopes, if arranged in advance.

10. Find an article on skiing or boarding that applies to your ability level. Read the article and highlight important parts. Summarise the article and tell why it is of importance to you. Turn in a one page typed summary and the highlighted article. Due by the exam date.

D. GRADING:

1. Participation in lessons is worth up to 40 points. The first lesson must be taken at 9:00 or 10:00 a.m., depending on your level. Be at the
check-in desk for group sales by 8am. Have your card signed by instructor and turn in along with your skills analysis after last class.

2. Practising of skills and skills summaries are worth up to 30 points. You are required to ski 4 additional hours during the 8-hour day. You may ski longer.

3. Written exam is 20 points. Take in the Alexandria Campus Testing center by February *

4. Written summary of article on skiing or boarding and summary of video information is worth 10 points.

5. If you stop attending class and fail to withdraw officially you will receive an "F" in this course.

*Arrangements could be made to take the exam at the slopes if
desired. See Mrs. Primus.

E. PAYMENT:

1. Payment is due at 8:00 each Saturday morning at the circle by the clock at Ski Liberty (inside Group Sales Office). Please be prompt. Those who come late will need to wait until the group has been served.

2. Cash or checks made out to Ski Liberty will be accepted. No credit cards accepted.

#1 Learn to Ski on Snowboard Package:
*Lift Ticket valid on First Class Quad Chair and Chair #1 only
*Includes Rental Skis or snowboard, Boots, Poles and Beginner
Class Lessons
*Designed for people who have never skied or boarded before

#4 Lift Ticket & Lesson:
*Lift Ticket valid on all open lifts and trails, plus a class lesson at the skier’s ability level.
*Rental equipment is not included.

#5 All Mountain Package:
*Lift Ticket valid on all ski lifts and trails open that day
*Use of Rental Skis, Boots and Poles or snowboard and boots
*Includes a Class Lesson at skier’s ability level

F. DIRECTIONS:

Washington, DC./Northern Virginia - 75 to 90 Minutes

1. Follow I-270 North to Frederick, MD.

2. In Frederick, take Rt. 15 North to Emmitsburg, MD.

3. Exit onto South Seton Avenue. Follow South Seton to traffic light and turn left onto Rt. 140 West.

4. Rt. 140 becomes Rt. 16 West at the PA line.

5. Follow Rt. 16 West to Rt. 116 East. Turn right onto Rt. 116 for 3 miles.

6. Ski Liberty is on the right.

G. MISCELLANEOUS:

1. Fill out your rental forms and waivers at the orientation and leave with me.

2. You must leave DC each Saturday morning so that you are at the Group Sales Office by the clock by 8:00 a.m. Have your cash or check ready. I will not have any change. No credit cards will be accepted.

3. Get all-inclusive ticket from me (and meal coupons).

4. Go with courtesy staff to get your rental equipment.

5. Plan to be on the slopes by 9:00 a.m. for your first lesson if a beginner. Go to the red ski school bell. Advanced lessons are at 10:00. Warm-up first.

6. Our class will get together the first day for lunch at 12:15 and to get acquainted and answer questions. Meet by the tables near the pizza area and plan to ski with someone afterwards. You may take another lesson at 2:00 if desired. Turn in your lesson card to me at lunch, or at 3:30 outside the chalet.

7. Be sure to bring warm jacket, snow pants or jeans, hat, ski or leather gloves or mittens, warm socks. Ski goggles are helpful, especially if they are making snow. No scarves

8. Turn in completed skill evaluations and course evaluation to your instructor at the slopes the last Saturday or when you take your exam, or mail to Mrs. Primus, NVCC (Alex. Campus), Visual and Performing Arts and Public Services Division, 3001 N. Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311, (703) 845-6251, by February 16. 10. During our time at the resort, individuals are expected to act responsibly and will promptly be dismissed from the class and receive a grade of "F" for irresponsible behaviour. Remember, alcohol and skiing don't mix.
