A. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of Swimming I is to help the non-swimmer and the weak swimmer-learn to swim so that he can handle himself in water not only safely, but also, with enjoyment and satisfaction.
B. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
The attached list of skill levels shows what will be covered in the course.
Swimming I will begin with level I. You will progress to whatever level you
are able.
C. TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS
Reference book available from American Red Cross: Swimming and Diving (not required)
Dress: All students must furnish a towel and swimming suit. Women and men with extremely long hair are required to wear a bathing cap.
Lockers: You must bring your own lock to class.
Fee: Check or cash to be paid to City of Alexandria by second class. Cost approximately $55.00, depending on number of students enrolled.
D. COURSE CONTENT
1. First 2 classes - Objectives of the course, grading, fees, and safety information will be discussed.
2. Remaining classes - Conducted at Chinquapin Recreation Center. The pool is located at 3210 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22302 (Phone #703-931-1127).
3. No class Thanksgiving Holiday.
E. PARTICIPATION
1. You will be given 5 points for actively participating in 13 classes; this means being dressed and ready for activity 5 minutes after the start of class and participating for the entire period.
2. Anyone who can not participate due to illness or injury will be required to make up the class or have points deducted.
3. For any student missing more than 3 classes, it will be up to the instructor whether that student will receive an "F", or be allowed to continue the class. Regular attendance at classes is required. Absence equal to 30% of the scheduled instruction time for a course will be defined as unsatisfactory progress.
4. This class can be strenuous. If you have any problem please see the instructor. Anyone over the age of 35 should see a physician before beginning any exercise program.
5. If you stop attending class and fail to go through official withdrawal procedures you will receive an "F" in the course.
6. Please sign a waiver form before participating.
F. EVALUATION
1. Proper Execution of basic skills- 25 points
2. Written Exam- 10 points (at pool)
3. Attendance- 65 points
