INTRODUCTION:

This course is for those students interested in learning the basics of golf and applying these to playing the game.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To develop an interest in golf as a worthwhile leisure activity.
2. To develop a working knowledge of the rules of golf.
3. To learn the basic golf skills
4. To have fun.

COURSE CONTENT:

LESSON 1 - Tyler 203

1. Class procedures
2. Equipment and clothes needed
3. Hains Point - Cost: $2.50/bucket (1-2); $6.50/9 holes red; $8.50 for white, $10.50 blue; $14.50/18 holes.
4. Location of Hains Point Driving Range (East Potomac PK. SW) (202) 554-7660 Cross 14th St. Bridge entering Washington, DC, in right lane. Take Potomac Park Police Exit right (brown sign) to stop sign. Go left and then right along golf course. Turn right by miniature golf course and continue on to clubhouse. If raining, Tyler, Room 203. If drizzling, Driving Range.

7. Stance and swinging motion.
8. Grip.
9. Pitch and chip shots if able to use field.

LESSON 2 - Tyler 203 & Hains Point

1. Grip and stance
2. Full swing: a. back swing b. downswing c. follow through
3. Addressing the ball
4. Middle irons
5. Chip and pitch shots
6. Rules, terminology & etiquette
7. Irons on the driving range
8. Introduce putting

LESSON 3 - Hains Point Driving Range
(If raining, call driving range to see if open)

1. Middle and short irons on the range.
2. Golf terms
3. Putting/practice-stroke and tap putts
4. Woods on the range
5. Chip shots
6. Rules and etiquette on the green

LESSON 4 - Hains Point Driving Range
(Tyler 203 if driving range closed)

1. Review full swing
2. Irons on the range- determine distances
3. Woods on the range- determine distances
4. Putting practice/ putting skills test if ready
5. Chip shots/ chipping skills test
6. Rules and etiquette on tee and fairway
7. Trouble shots and procedures (sand traps)

LESSON 5 - Driving Range - Hains Point
(No class if driving range closed)

1. Practice woods and irons on the range (list distances on a card)
2. Review putting on the green (putt 9 holes and record putts)
3. Review rules & procedures for playing course from book
4. Putting/chipping skills test if ready
5. Play 9 holes if experienced

LESSON 6 - Hains Point Driving Range
(No class if driving range is closed)

1. Putting skills test
2. Chipping skills test
3. Skill check on the range
4. Review rules, etiquette, and terms
5. Review procedures for playing course
6. Play par 3 course- Best Ball/Captain's Choice if ready

LESSON 7 - Hains Point

1. Written Exam- Bring completed definitions of golf terms and 30 min. of golf summary (If raining, Tyler 242).
2. Putting skill test make-ups
3. Chipping skills test make-ups
4. Review and correct faults if on the range
5. Play par 3 course, white or blue (must have played twice with class)
6. Return borrowed clubs
7. Turn in score card of make-up game and receipt from golf course.
Make-up- if unable to play due to weather previous two classes.

GRADING

A. Participation - 60% (8 points per class - includes attendance, effort, and productivity).
B Assignments- 10% Definitions of golf terms; paragraph explaining what you learned watching 30 minutes of a golf tournament on TV-how it can help your technique-( 7 points each ).
C. Final Exam - 20%
D. Skills - 10% (Putting and chipping tests)
E. Play extra 9 holes and turn in score card – make up for one class. Keep track of putts too.
F. Grading Scale: 88-100 - A
77-87 - B
68-77 - C
58-67 - D
G. Make-ups: You may make up one missed class. To make up, you may play 9 holes of golf or hit 2 buckets of balls twice and bring receipts for one make-up. (total 4 buckets =1 make-up)
All make-ups due by Oct. 20 to Tyler 230

REQUIREMENT FOR THE COURSE:

“ Regular attendance at classes is required. Absences equal to 30% of the scheduled instructional time for a course will be defined as unsatisfactory progress...” If you miss three classes in a row without notifying the instructor, you will be withdrawn.
1. You will be evaluated on actively participating in 7 class sessions worth 8 points each. This means being at the golf course and ready for activity, 5 minutes after the class begins and remaining for the entire period (unless it’s raining or freezing).
2. Points will be deducted for coming late, leaving early, and for lack of productivity.
3. For any student missing more than 3 classes, it will be up the discretion of the instructor whether that student will received and “F”, should withdraw, or be allowed to continue in the class.
4. If you stop attending class and fail to go through official withdrawal procedures, you will receive an “F” on your grade report.
5. Watch 30 minutes of a golf tournament. Write up something, that can help your game, about golf technique or form from one or more players. Turn in before the final class. (Worth 7 points)
6. Define each of the golf terms on the study guide. Bring them to turn them in at the final exam. (Worth 7 points)
7. Medical or physical problems: See instructor and fill out medical form.
8. If lightening and /or thundering, meet at Tyler 203. If drizzling, meet under cover of driving range; call to check that range is open. (202-554-7660 ext. 1))
