The Alexandria Campus Band was formed in the fall of 1977 under the leadership of Dr. Robert Petrella. The band began with 17 people and now has a membership of 80 musicians from the college and the community. Many members have been with the ensemble 15 to 30+ years.

Dr. Petrella retired in the spring of 2007 and handed his baton to Dr. Wendy Matthews, formerly the Associate Director. The band launched its opening under it new director in fall, 2007.

The band has been invited to the Kennedy Center, Georgetown University, the George Washington Masonic Temple, and other sites in the metropolitan area.The band is now one of the largest community college bands in the US.

THE NVCC SUMMER BAND CAMP is a great opportunity for band students, ages 10-14, to perform with other talented students. Instrumentalists will need at least one year of experience on their instrument. Students will participate in large and small group rehearsals and attend daily classes on such topics as audio recording, jazz improvisation, instrument maintenance, and performance skills. In addition, the students will attend performances by professional musicians. Dr. Wendy Matthews is conductor and lead clinician; e-mail her at wmatthews@nvcc.edu to learn more!
The camp will be July 13-17 from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm in the Tyler Building of the Alexandria Campus. The final concert for family and friends will be held on July 17 at 2:30 pm in Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center, also on the Alexandria Campus. Gala performance with the 257th Army Band, July 16th at 7:30 pm.

Dr.Wendy Matthews, received her Bachelor of Music Degree from Peabody Conservatory of Music, in Baltimore, MD, after which she earned her Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland-College Park and a doctorate from George Mason University concentrating in Educational Psychology and Wind Band Conducting. Her research interests include the learning and cognition of music and collective efficacy of performing ensembles.

 

From 1995-2002, Ms Matthews was the Director of Bands at Georgetown University. Under her direction, the band completed it's first CD and was awarded the Office of Performing Arts Special Directors Award for Outstanding Student Group. In 2002, Dr. Matthews was the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award at Georgetown University.

Dr. Mattews has guest conducted on the local, regional, and national level. Most recently, she has conducted at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Summer Music Camp and the Hartt School of Music Wind Ensemble at the College Band Directors National Association-Eastern Division Conference. Dr. Matthews is a free-lance trumpeter and has performed with the Alexandria Band, the Prince Georges Philharmonic, the Capital Wind Symphony the National Concert Band of America and the National Orchestral Institute.
