Education:
Ithaca College, Bachelor of Music
in Education and Voice
Northern Virginia Community College,
A.A.S. degree in Advertising
Design and Illustration
I was born in Washington, D.C. and raised
in Falls Church, Virginia. Mother was a commercial artist
and Dad designed maps for the government. My older brother
and I went on trips in the summer with my parents to many
areas of the U.S.
I went to college at Ithaca College in New
York state and earned a Bachelor of Music degree with specializations
in education and voice. After two years teaching elementary
school music and performing as often as possible I auditioned
and was accepted to the U.S. Air Force Band Singing Sergeants.
Although basic training was not wonderful, the remaining four
years were terrific, comprised of singing and travel.
After
the service I chose to use the G.I. Bill to study art. I
had married and had two young children so an excellent, inexpensive
and local design school was the goal. NVCC at Alexandria
had that reputation. I earned one A.A.S. degree in Advertising
Design and one in Illustration. After working for other companies
I began my own business, Evergeen Graphics, and continued
working as a designer and illustrator. I applied when a full-time
teaching position opened in the design program at NVCC Alexandria.
20 years of teaching followed during which
I completed an additional 15 graduate credits at GMU in 3-dimensional
computer graphics. I became program head in 2002. Whenever
possible I accept freelance design work to remain current in
the field.
