1. 10 STEP GRAY
SCALE
Choose a hue
(color). Do a design that creates a pattern that fits into a
5" x
5" square. This 5" square will be divided into 25,
1" x 1" squares. Repeat this design twice, one based
on a 10 step gray scale, the other, a corresponding value of
the selected color. These two designs will be mounted on 11" x
14" bristol board.
MATERIALS:
Bristol board, gouache, 1/2" flat brush, studio tac, matt
knife, ruler.
2. COLOR WHEEL
Create the concept of
a 12 part color wheel that is not a traditional color wheel form.
You should also include in you design the pure hue and two tints
for each of these hues.
MATERIALS: Color Aid
or Chromarama paper, bristol board, brushes, gouache.
3. INTENSITY
Create a design where
one of the areas is more intense than the other areas. You may
use either gouache or color paper.
MATERIALS: Gouache or
color paper, matt knife, studio tac, bristol board
4. GOETHE'S
MIXING TRIANGLE
You will produce 2 mixing
triangles, one using the primary colors, one using secondary
colors. After you have painted both triangles, cut each of the
triangles into two parts, so that the apex (which will be the
lightest color in each triangle) is equally divided. You will
then reassemble the four triangles and mount them to produce
an exciting design.
MATERIALS: Gouache,
bristol board, brush
5. SPATIAL AND
STRUCTURAL
Do a composition combining
both structural and spatial color. You may use either gouache
or color paper.
MATERIALS: Gouache,
color paper, bristol board
6. FILM COLOR
Using overlapping planes,
create a design with the illusion of transparency.
MATERIALS: Gouache,
brush, bristol board
7. EXPLORATION OF MACHINERY AS A MOTIVATION FOR A DESIGN
This problem will explore
the possibilities of using the different shapes of a piece of
machinery in the development of an exciting design. The student
will bring in images of different machinery. Choose an images
that contain a variety of shapes.
a. Do several contour drawings emphasizing the shapes of the form you
have chosen. Draw different angles, close-ups of certain areas. Then
decide which will work the most successfully as a design.
b. After choosing the design you will be working with, do a finished
contour line drawing on bristol board in ink.
c. Utilizing at least two color harmonies, create a composition using this
same design. You may use gouache or color paper for this.
d. The final part of this project will involve creating a relief composition.
This will be further discussed in class.
MATERIALS: Machinery
images, tracing paper, gouache or color paper
8. 3-D FORMS AS COMMUNICATION
This problem involves
working with something literal and constructing it three dimensionally
out of any material or combination of materials. You should also
consider integrating color as part of your solution to the problem.
It should be apparent (through visualization) to the viewer,
the specific, pun, cliche, or play on words.
9. A 3-DIMENSIONAL SELF PORTRAIT
Using any concepts explored,
and or combination of color theories, construct a self portrait
utilizing materials of your choice. This self portrait may either
be representational or abstract, the emphasis should be on composition
and tatement.
