Syllabus

The beginning painting series has a drawing prerequisite. Most beginners' painting problems are drawing problems! The focus of these classes is on observation, composition and color. Once students have the "basic tools" needed to craft a good painting,, their concepts can be developed.

Painting 1

Projects/assignments vary, course content is consistant:

* Intro to materials and surfaces
* Construction of glass palette
* Color mixing and coverage
* Color Swatch notebook
* Basic Color Theory
* Color Substitution
* Review of composition/ movements
* Collage
* Limited palette
* Underpainting techniques
* Still life
* Figure painting
* Abstraction
* Field Trips
* Research of painters' work
* Critiques

Painting 2:

Generally, the second level students are expected to practice! Assignments are usually the same, but more advanced work is expected.

Some additional assignments might include:

* Color as space
* Trompe l'oiel
* Work in series
* Canvas stretching
* Various painting techniques
