PROBLEMS:
1. ORGANIZATION: Reversal (figure-ground,
positive-negative): Cut out 3 geometric shapes from black construction paper.
Use these forms to create an exciting
composition that has a lot of visual movement, and creates the effect of figure
-ground reversal. These shapes are to be glued on 9" x9" white construction
paper. After this is completed, you will use the same shapes and design, this
time cutting the shapes out of white construction paper and gluing them on
a 9" x 9" piece of black construction paper. What you have created
is called a unit form. You will now take these 2 unit forms that are 9" x
9" and reduce them to create 9, 3" x 3" unit forms of the following:
4 - black on white
4 - white on black
1 - choice
These smaller forms will be mounted on a piece of 9" x 9" construction
paper. They should be arranged to create and exciting over-all design.
MATERIALS: Black and white 18 x 24 paper ( 1 sheet each), studio tac/ glue stick, pencil, scissors, matt knife, ruler.
2. LINE: Movement, quality, surface, variation, tension, direction: This problem
will consist of the following two parts:
(a) Choose an image from a book or magazine. Do a composition of this on white bristol board, utilizing a variety of different types of line/marks. The objective is to re-create the lights and darks ( what is called value) of the photo, using different densities of lines. The image size should not exceed 4" x 6", centered on 11" x 14" bristol board.
(b) Choose a letter (any type or style) and abstract it in some way by utilizing a variety of lines. This should be centered on 11" x 14" bristol board.
MATERIALS: Bristol board, black disposable technical pen or rapidograph, pen and ink, tracing paper, pencil.
3. RELIEF /ORGANIZATION: Using an image, such as one from a magazine, render the forms in relief, using a build up of contoured bristol board planes.
MATERIALS: Magazine image, bristol board, glue stick/ studio tac tracing paper, scissors, X-acto knife.
4. SHAPE -SPACE-VALUE: 3-dimensional space suggested by value: This problem
will consist of the following two parts:
(a) Do a value study, by using black and white acrylic to create a vertical, linear grid (1" x 1" squares). This will be accomplished by going from white to black, establishing seven steps or values of gray in between. The one inch squares should be painted on bristol board and mounted vertically on another piece of bristol board.
MATERIALS: 1/2" Flat (Bright) brush, assorted paint brushes, bristol board, black and white acrylic, mixing palate, water container.
(b) Using a reproduction of a Great Master painting that has deep space, you
will do the following:
(1) Reduce the painting down to it's basic shapes, and do a contour line
drawing on tracing paper.(2) Transfer these shapes from the painting on to foam core and cut out. These shapes
will be painted in black, white, and gray corresponding to the values of the
original painting. You then re-create the painting three dimensionally by
suspending the painted cut shapes in a box.
NOTE: It is recommended to use a xerox of the book reproduction. By
xeroxing the image, you are reducing it to value of black, white, and
gray.
MATERIALS: Foam core, black and white acrylic, assorted brushes, X-acto knife, bristol board, glue stick/ studio tac, white glue.
5. TEXTURE: Using rigid wrap or plastercraft, you will be making a life mask
of your face. This will then be covered with soft textured materials, being
sensitive to create an interesting composition, by the placement of materials.
The finished mask should be painted black, white, and gray.
MATERIALS: Rigid wrap, cardboard, Vaseline, bowl, towel, textures materials, scissors.
6. LINE / FORM & FUNCTION : Using toothpicks and balsa wood and glue, create
a three dimensional linear structure around an egg, that will, be aesthetically
pleasing and protect the egg when the structure is dropped approx. 9 feet.
MATERIALS: Egg, toothpicks, balsa wood, craft glue ( sobo, elmers, tacky glue).
