What is networking?
Networking is people connecting with people, linking ideas and resources. It involves expanding your range of personal and professional contacts. Networking is not "schmoozing" or using people to get job interviews and offers.
Why should you do networking?
About 80% of all jobs are obtained through networking
To identify career fields, organizations, and jobs of interest, and evaluate whether they are right for you.
To better define what type of positions to seek
To learn about job openings which are not advertised to the public, but do not ask for a job! If the match and timing are right, your contact will tell you of job openings
. To enhance your interviewing skills
To connect with people who are doing what you want to do.
What are the different forms of networking?
Informational interviewing
Make connections with people in personal network like family, friends, neighbors, and classmates.
Contact people in professional network such as former bosses, professors, and alumni.
Join professional associations and attend professional meetings and conferences.
Communicate with professionals in field of interest through discussion lists and listservs.
Take advantage of making contacts with people at chance meetings.
How do you network?
Know yourself: skills, interests, values, and qualifications.
Know basic information about your career interest such as through classes, career books, and Internet.
Set goals for yourself and your job search.
Think of everyone you meet as a potential networking contact.
Know what you want from the networking contact (i.e. advice, information to make a career choice, contacts, find out about jobs).
Approach the familiar people and the less desired organizations first.
Offer something in return (i.e. tips on organizations, information on careers, appreciation)
Keep a well-documented record of contacts. Organization is the key to networking success!
Be patient and persistent. Networking is a process, and you may hear "no"a lot.
Send a thank you letter if you have had an informational interview.
Keep in touch! Building a network is an ongoing project. The process can be enjoyable and rewarding
