::: What were your goals and objectives when you entered Northern Virginia Community College? Have they changed or expanded since your enrollment? How and why?
Originally, I was focused on taking the classes I needed to get an Associates Degree. After getting into Phi Theta Kappa, a lot of things changed. I found myself developing new skills and relationships. I took on a strong leadership role this past year after gaining some experience, and it has made the whole college experience a lot more gratifying. I have also taken a ton of classes that were not in my curriculum for a degree, such as drawing, painting, and tae kwon do. All of these things that have taught me a lot, and balanced out all of the academic classes.
::: What has been your favorite class here at NVCC, your favorite instructor and why?
I really enjoyed my art classes, all of which I took with Sherry Trachtman, a very talented, kind, and understanding woman. Not only did she help me to blossom as an artist, I feel that she learned a great deal about me through my art.
::: Describe a favorite NVCC memory?
I have so many! My involvement in Phi Theta Kappa brought me to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life last year. It was so much fun and genuinely rewarding. I also got to know my fellow officers a lot better outside of school.
::: How would you describe your experience as an officer within Student Activities at NVCC?
It’s been great. I started out not sure what I was getting myself into. But as time passed, I adapted and I think I learned the most by helping new officers through the same experience.
::: How has NVCC helped you to achieve your career and life goals?
It has given me a lot of time and space to grow and figure out more about myself. For example, when I first started I didn’t know which path I would rather take…art or science. After taking a few different classes in each, I realized I could easily go either way. I have developed a strong sense of pride not only in school, but in my community.
::: What advice would you give to a student considering attending NVCC?
Get involved! It helps to make the college experience more worth your while. And don’t be afraid to ask for help - there are so many people here who are willing to give it.
