Section 3 - Hazards
Identification |
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: white or yellow-white crystals. Danger! Highly
toxic. Aspiration hazard if swallowed. Can enter lungs and cause damage. May be
harmful if swallowed. May be fatal if inhaled. Causes respiratory tract
irritation. May cause digestive tract irritation. Causes eye and skin
irritation. Light sensitive.
Target Organs: Blood, kidneys,
liver, eyes.
Potential Health
Effects
Eye: Causes moderate eye irritation.
May cause lens opacities and retinal changes.
Skin: Causes
mild skin irritation.
Ingestion: Aspiration hazard. May
cause irritation of the digestive tract. May be harmful if swallowed.
Inhalation: May be fatal if inhaled. Causes respiratory
tract irritation.
Chronic: Chronic inhalation may cause
effects similar to those of acute inhalation. Laboratory experiments have
resulted in mutagenic effects. Prolonged exposure may cause abdominal pain,
nausea, vomiting, and possible convulsions. Intestinal and percutaneous
absorption may lead to severe nephritis, liver injury and acute hemolytic
anemia.
|
Section 4 - First Aid
Measures |
Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water
for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get
medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin
with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated
clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of
milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get
medical aid immediately.
Inhalation: Get medical aid
immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If
breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If
breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable
mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to
Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.
|
Section 5 - Fire
Fighting Measures |
General
Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus
in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective
gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by
thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use extinguishing media most appropriate for the surrounding fire. Use water
spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.
Flash
Point: 160 deg C ( 320.00 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: Not
available.

|
Section 6 -
Accidental Release Measures |
General
Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in
Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Vacuum or sweep up material and
place into a suitable disposal container. Clean up spills immediately, observing
precautions in the Protective Equipment section. If sweeping is necessary, use a
dust suppressant agent. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.
|
Section 7 - Handling
and Storage |
Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Minimize
dust generation and accumulation. Do not get on skin and clothing. Do not ingest
or inhale. Store protected from light. Use only in a chemical fume hood. Do not
breathe dust or fumes.
Storage: Keep away from heat,
sparks, and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not store in direct
sunlight. Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed
container. Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Store in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from strong
bases. Material darkens in color on storage.
|
Section 8 - Exposure
Controls, Personal Protection |
Engineering
Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be
equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use only under a chemical
fume hood.
