Lewis Structures – Computer Lab

Chemistry 111 Computer Lab instructions:

1.  Double-Click on the "Chemistry" Folder:
2.  Double-Click on "Discover Chemistry":
3.  Click on the screen:
4.  Click on "Molecules"
        A) Click on "Lewis Structures / Resonance"
                a) Click on "Building a Lewis Structure"
                Explore the various features

        B)  Follow the instructions to build Lewis on "Electron Configurations"

Click on "Elemental Configurations" Structures. This will allow you to add electrons and get a good Lewis Structure. Don’t forget to check the geometry.

        C)  Click on "Shapes and Dipoles"
                a) Click on "Molecular Geometry and Polarity" and work the problems.
                b) The "Building Molecules" portion is on Organic molecules. Skip it.

5.  Get the "Chemistry Interactive CD Disc One"

        A) Click on "Chapter 8"

        B)  Click on "Overview" This is an overview or review of Chapter 8.
        C)  Click on "Exploration" Click on "The VSEPR Theory of Molecular Structure" . Click on the > to go to the next page. On page 3 or 6 there is an icon of an ammonia molecule. Click on it. This will take you into the "RasMol" program. "RasMol" is a program that is used throughout Chemistry Interactive. It gives great 3-D animations of the molecules. Once in "RasMol" click on "Display" click on either spacefill or ball and stick. Click on the molecule and drag the pointer to see the molecule rotate.
        D)  Page 6 of 6 is the "Exercises" click on any molecule. The Hint: Examine Lewis structure is just that. The Hint: Examine Shape takes you back into "RasMol". Definitely examine the shapes of the molecules. This really helps determine if the molecules are polar or not!

6. When you are through, you can either click on "Problem Sets" or go back to the "Contents" and click on "Chapter 9" or "Exit".
