Employment

Salary
There are 24 pay periods each year. The following pay scales shows salaries for new officers, the salary once an officer has completed the police academy and the minimum salary for a currently certified officer.

Post Academy $35,200
Currently Certified $35,200

 

Leave

Retirement
An officer is eligible for retirement after 25 years of service at 62.5 percent of average compensation for the highest consecutive 36 months of service.

Annual Leave
Employees earn between 12 and 27 days of annual leave each year, based on years of service (after five years, the amount of leave is increased). Employees may also accumulate between 24 and 54 days of annual leave, based on years of service.

Paid Holidays
There are 12 paid holidays per year.

Sick Leave
Sick leave is a provision of the Virginia Sickness & Disability Program (VSDP). Employees are credited, based on their hire date, a minimum of 40 hours of sick leave that can be used during the calendar year. At the beginning of each subsequent calendar year, sick leave is credited based on the number of months of state service (not to exceed 80 hours).

Family & Personal
Family & Personal leave is a provision of the VSDP. Employees are credited, based on their hire date, a minimum of 16 hours of family & personal leave that can be used during the calendar year. At the beginning of each subsequent calendar year, family & personal leave is credited based on the number of months of state service (not to exceed 40 hours).

Income Protection
Short and Long term disability income protection is a provision of the VSDP.

Overtime Availability
Employees are covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Non-exempt employees are eligible to receive time and one half compensation, in the form of pay or leave credit, for hours worked over 80 in a 14-day period (section 207k). Exempt employees are eligible to receive hour-for-hour compensation, in the form of pay or leave credit, for hours worked beyond the regular 40 hour work week schedule (as approved by the supervisor)

 

Retirement

Pension Plan
Participation in the Virginia Law Officer's Retirement System (VaLORS). The vesting period is five years. An officer is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 with 25 years of service or at age 60 with 5 years of service. Reduced benefits are available at age 50 with 5 years of service. The retirement benefit is based on the average compensation for the highest consecutive 36 months of service.

Deferred Compensation
Employees may participate in deferred compensation plans to save income for retirement while enjoying the benefits of a tax-deferred deduction.

Cash Match
The Commonwealth of Virginia provides funds for the College to make a contribution to an employee's deferred compensation account. The contribution is based on a formula that matches up to 50% of an employee's contribution to the plan (current maximum is $40.00/month).

 

Insurance

Health Insurance
Plans, by design, are Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Point of Service (POS), or Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO). Employees may select coverage through Kaiser Permanente, AETNA, or Trigon. The Commonwealth offers four categories of membership: employee, employee plus one, family, and double-state (for a married couple that both work for the state and have covered dependents).

Long Term Care Insurance (LTC)
VSDP participants have an employer-paid LTC benefit through AETNA US Healthcare which provides a $75.00/day benefit, with a two-year lifetime maximum. Employees may also choose to purchase an employee-paid LTC benefit in order to provide additional coverage for themselves, or for a spouse or parents.

Group Term Life Insurance
Group Term Life insurance is an employer-paid benefit, provided by Minnesota Life. This is term coverage, with a double indemnity provision for accidental death/dismemberment.

Optional Life Insurance
Employees may choose to purchase an employee-paid life insurance benefit in order to provide additional coverage for themselves, for a spouse, or children. This coverage can be up to four times their annual salary

 

Other Benefits

Flexible Benefits
Flexible benefits such as medical reimbursement accounts and dependent care accounts are available through Fringe Benefit Management Company (FBMC).

Commonwealth Commuter Choice
Employees may receive reimbursement for participation in the Commonwealth Commuter Choice program, if they use public transportation to travel to and from work.

 

Equipment
The department furnishes all uniforms and equipment.

Applicant Qualifications
Perhaps no professional group other than police are continually subjected  to the range of physical and mental stress under hazardous conditions common in police work. Each candidate must be thoroughly evaluated to determine if their abilities are compatible with the duties and responsibilities of a police officer. To be considered for employment, you must be able to meet the following standards:

  • U.S. Citizen

  • Be 21 years of age at date of appointment. (State law requires officers to retire at age 70.)

  • High school graduate or possess a valid G.E.D. certificate recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Possess or can acquire a valid Virginia Operator’s License.

  • Illegal drug use will be scrutinized with respect to date of last use, type of drug and frequency of use.
