HOW TO APPLY FOR BENNIFITS

THE FIVE MAIN STEPS YOU USE

Step 1.  Apply for Admissions to the College.  Note you MUST choose a degree plan or certificate plan in order to apply for VA Benefits.  Also, please learn and understand NVCC's policy regarding our in-state/out-of-state tuition rate, especially if you are still on active duty, plan to get out, stay in Virginia and attend a Virginia State College.

Please note, you must use the correct Campus Veteran Counselor.  For example, if the degree plan you choose is only offered at the Annandale Campus you must use the  Annandale's Veteran's Affairs Counselor.

Step 2Getting Started (One Time Requirement)  If you have been issued a VA Educational Certificate of Eligibility you can skip the application process.  With the exception of  Chapter 31 Veteran's (see link), all Veterans who never used their benefits before, must complete an Application for Education VA Bennifits .  The preferred method for completing an application is on-line.  However, if for what ever reason you can't complete an on-line application you can use the paper application.  For additional information about the different VA Educational Chapters please see below.   Drilling Reservist must also submit a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) from their Reserve Unit.

Step 3.   The DVA requires an evaluation of your military training/experience and all prior college credits.  Send an official copy of your military transcript and one from each college attended to our Admissions and Records Office, Bisdorf 229. After all transcripts have been sent and you have been notified (normally by mail) that NVCC has received your transcripts, call a counselor @ 703-845-6301 and schedule an appointment to complete your evaluation.  All credits must be evaluated  by the end of your second semester,  otherwise, the DVA will stop your benefits.

Step 4.  Register for your courses.  Complete and turn in to the Campus Veteran Advisor a NVCC Veterans Enrollment Reporting Form, NVCC Form 125-63. This form is required each semester for you to receive benefits.  Please note, NVCC does not participate in the Advanced Payment Program.

Veterans who are new to the Alexandria Campus, need to submit the following to the Campus Veteran Advisor:

  • Member 4 copy of your DD form 214
  • VA Certificate of Eligibility (copy only)
  • College Fund Contract (if any) (Part of your enlistment contract found in Service Record)
  • Buy-up (Kicker) documents (if any, LES, etc.)

Note, if you are a music student and want to get reimbursement for your private lessons you will need to submit to your Campus VA Advisor the VA Application and Enrollment Certification form.  Please see the music department web page and their music student handbook for details on their music program.

Step 5.  On the last day of each month, you must certify your enrollment on the VA Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) at  https://www.gibill.va.gov/save.default.cfm or by calling the toll free Interactive Voice Response (IVR) at: 1-877-823-2378.  Do this promptly because you cannot be paid until you replyRemember to repeat this process on the last working day of each month for which you are entitled to benefits, otherwise you will get no pay.

Step 6.  Notify the Veterans Advisor of Changes to your enrollment immediately by submitting the below form.  Adds or drops may affect your pay.  Avoid overpayment or underpayment of benefits by promptly reporting changes. Report any changes on your monthly certification to DVA also.
