VPN and Remote Desktop Directions

1.      Here are the IP Address and DNS names for the currently installed Cisco VPN's.  Please have your Campus use the one assigned to your Campus but you can use any one if your assigned VPN is unavailable.

Directions to setup VPN on a home system or laptop.

 

 

1.         Start

2.         Right click on My Network Places

3.         Left click Properties

 

 

 

4.         Click on Create a new connection

 

 

5.         Click on Next

6.         Select Connect to the Network at my workplace (VPN)

7.         Click on Next

 

 

8.         Click on Virtual Private Network connection (VPN)

9.         Click on Next

 

 

10.              Type in the name for the connection you want to use, NVCC

11.              Click on Next

 

 

12.              Click on Do not dial the initial connection.

13.              Click on Next.

 

 

14.              Type in the DNS Name (or IP Address) associated with your Campus.

15.              Click on Next

 

 

16.              Click on Create this connection for Anyone’s use.

17.              Click on Next.

 

 

18.              Click on Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.

19.              Click on Finish

 

 

 

20.              The connection box will appear on the screen (If it does not double click on the icon on your desktop).

21.              Click on Properties

 

 

22.              Click on the Options Tab

23.              Click on Include Windows logon domain

 

 

24.              Click on the Networking Tab

25.              Change the Type of VPN to PPTP VPN.

 

 

26.              Click on OK.

 

You are now ready to use the VPN connection to NVCC. You will need to use your NVCC account to access the system.

Once you are connected to NVCC you will see a Network Connection  icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.

 

Without using Remote Desktop Connection to connect directly to your computer at work, you will be able to connect/use to the following:

 

Outlook connecting to the Exchange server – All options are available (address book, calendars, etc.)

            Map a drive to a Network Share (Home drive, Department drive, etc)

            Connect to a Printer

            Anything you can do while on a college computer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Instructions for Mapping to Your H: Drive

 

  1. Click on Start and then right-click My Computer, and then click Map Network Drive.

 

You will see the dialog box below titled Map Network Drive.

 

 

 

  1. As illustrated above, click on the down arrow next to Drive: and then select H:
  2. In the Folder field, type in the following:  \\nvcc-alfs01\<username>; for <username> type in your username, the same one that you use on your computer at work.
  3. Make sure the Reconnect at logon is checked and then click Finish.
  4. Usually your H: drive folder opens automatically; if it does not, you will find it listed with your other drives in My Computer.
  5. To connect to your division folder (aka G: drive), repeat the steps, select G: as the Folder and then type in the following; \\nvcc-alfs01\<3-letter-division-name>
  6. The division names are (alphabetical order):

 

    1. albdv – Business Division
    2. albus – Business Office
    3. alceu – Continuing Education
    4. alcns – Counseling
    5. alhss – Humanities & Social Sciences
    6. allab – Learning Labs
    7. allib – Library
    8. allrs – LRS
    9. alpol – Campus Police
    10. alpro – Provost Office
    11. alsat – Science & Applied Technologies
    12. alstd – Student Services Center
    13. alvpa – Visual & Performing Arts

For example, if you are in the Humanities Division, you would type in \\nvcc-alfs01\alhss

 

 

Connecting to the College’s Remote Server

 

If you are interested in using the full version of Outlook instead of Web Outlook from home or off-campus, you can connect to the college’s Remoter Server and use any of the Microsoft Office programs available there, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook.

 

Additionally, while connected to the remote server you can map your network drives.

 

To connect to the remote server:

 

  1. Make sure your are already connected to NVCC via VPN.
  2. Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | Communications and open Remote Desktop Connection

 

 

  1. Type in nvcc-remote and click Connect.
  2. Depending on the version of Windows XP you are using (either XP Home Edition or XP Professional) you might see an OK button to click, or you might see this illustration:

 

 

  1. If you get the OK button, click it and then log in like you normally do at work; make sure that the Log on to: says NVCC
  2. If you get the dialog box above, then type in: NVCC\<username> the same one that you use on your computer at work, and then type in your password.
  3. Once you are on nvcc-remote, you will find Microsoft Office programs under Start | All Programs | Microsoft Office
  4. To configure Outlook to connect to your Inbox, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, right-click E-Mail, and then click Properties
    2. Select the “Always use this profile” radio button, and then Click Add
    3. Under Create New Profile, type in your first name, then click OK
    4. Click Next on the E-Mail Accounts Wizard
    5. Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next
    6. At Microsoft Exchange Server: type in NVCC-MAIL01; in the User name field type in your username (the same as you always use to log in with at work) and then click Check Name
    7. When your name is underscored, click Next, click Finish and then click OK

 

You are now ready to use the full version of Outlook from the college’s remote server, and you can also follow the steps above to map to your drives (G: and H:)
