Subject Directories: For academic research, it is usually better to start an Internet search with a Subject directory, because they are smaller and more selective than search engines.
About.com
Librarian's
Index to the Internet
Yahoo!
Search Engines: Search engines can be very large, and are not at all selective about the web sites they find. Search engines are good to use when you have a very specific topic.
