Article Databases

START at the Library home page -www.nvcc.edu/library
    - Select Articles
          - Select "Humanities-Literature"

Good databases to start with:

Literature Resource Center - Provides author information, criticism and interpretation, and plot summaries. An Author Search will find the broadest amount of information. Advanced and Keyword searches allow you to be more specific about the information you need. [Note: The "Title Search" in this database is not very effective. Try a "Keyword Search" using the title and author's name instead (see examples further below), or try an "Advanced Search" (see sample screen capture below)]

JSTOR - Provides articles from scholarly journals. On the "Advanced Search" page, type in your search terms, select the"Language & Literature" and "Latin American Studies" collections (and any other collections that seem relevant) from the list below the search box.

Academic Search Complete, ProQuest and Factiva (under "More Database Choices") - Provide articles on many topics, including articles with reviews, criticism, and background infromation on literature.

Examples of Keyword searches:

Julio Cortazar AND cronopios and famas
Cabrera Infante AND language
Cristina Peri Rossi AND ship of fools

Cristina Peri Rossi AND nave de los locos
[try searching for the title in Spanish and English]

macho camacho* AND Luis Rafael Sanchez [the *asterisk* tells the database to search for any words starting with the letters preceding it; in this case, this search will find articles with either Macho Camacho
's Beat or La Guaracha del Macho Camacho.]

If the complete text of the article you want is not in the database you're using, you can check to see if it is available in another library database or in another format (e.g., paper or microfilm) by checking for the title of the magazine, journal, or newspaper in our Periodical List. If we do subscribe to the periodical you need, this list will tell you where to find it.
