Periodical Databases

ProQuest provides editorials primarily from major national newspapers, including the Washington Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, and Los Angeles Times.  (Specific instructions for finding just editorials are provided below.)

Factiva provides editorials from major national newspapers, but also includes editorials from regional newspapers, such as the Richmond Times-Dispatch(Specific instructions for finding just editorials are provided below.)

 

 

How to find editorials in ProQuest

  • On ProQuest's search page, type your topic in the search box, then scroll down and click on “More search options.” 
  • One of the options will be to search by “Document Type.”  In that dropdown menu, select “Editorial.”  (You can also make other specifications in this “more options” area – for example, you can specify which newspaper you want to search in.)
  • Finally, click on the “Search” button.

 

 

How to find editorials in Factiva

  • On Factiva's search page, scroll down and click on “Subject”.  Then click on the + sign in front of “Content Types.” 
  • Scroll down the list of “content types” and click on “Editorial.”
  • In the “Free Text” search box, type in the topic you’re interested in.
  • Scroll down, and under “More Search Options,” make sure “Headline and Lead Paragraph” is selected so that you get better, more relevant results.
  • Click on “Run Search.”

You can use ProQuest, Factiva, and other library databases from an off-campus computer.  When you are off-campus, though, you will need to log in.  See the Remote Access page for details.

 

Web Sites

HeadlineSpot: Opinion/Editorials  Provides links to current editorials from national and international news sources.  (Some sites may charge you to access articles or may require free sign-in.)

NewsVoyager     Provides links to national and regional newspaper web sites, where you can search their editorial pages.  (Some sites may charge you to access articles or may require free sign-in.)

Online Newspapers From Around the World      Provides links to newspapers worldwide.  You can search their editorial pages.  (Some sites may charge you or may require free sign-in.)
