Deadlines | Student Visas (F1/M1 Status) | Required Documents for an I-20 | English Language Proficiency

Student Deadlines (F-1 Visa)
Application deadlines differ by semester. Pending legislation that could become law soon states that internatinal students may not come to the United States until 30 days before the date written on the I-20.

Admissions offices must comply fully with federal law and regulations regarding admission of non-immigrant students and issuance of I-20 forms for student visas (F-1/M-1). Except as restricted by federal law or regulation, College policies apply equally to all students regardless of immigration status.

Student Visas (F1/M1 Status)
Northern Virginia Community College is authorized by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to enroll non-immigrant international students. The college is authorized to issue an I-20 for Academic Studies or an I-20 for English Language Training (English as a Second Language, i.e., ESL).

I-20 for Academic Studies
All required documents and test scores for I-20 applicants must be received sixty (60) days prior to the beginning of classes for the semester you plan to attend. After you have provided the required documentation, been admitted for full-time enrollment, and declared your major area of study, a form I-20 can be issued by the College.

If you are in the United States and already have F1 or M1 status but wish to transfer to NVCC, you must first complete at least one term at the school that issued you the I-20. If you currently hold another type of visa status, or need further information about student visas, you should contact the Admissions and Records Office.

You must enroll as a full-time student. That means you will need to complete at least 12 semester hours in both the fall and spring semesters and maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A. (grade point average).

Note
: Extended Learning Courses (Online Courses) and courses with a grade of "W" (withdrawal) and "X" (audit) grades are not counted in the calculation of total enrollment hours.

I-20 for English Language Training
Students who wish to attend Northern Virginia Community College for the purpose of English Language Training (ESL only), should contact the Office of Continuing Education.
