Welcome to the Spanish Language Program at Northern Virginia Community College.
We have courses for a variety of students. Those who need to study Spanish in order to fulfill the foreign language requirement for the A.A. degree at NVCC (or to transfer courses to another college with a similar language requirement) should choose from the 4-semester Spanish sequence SPA101-102 (Beginning Spanish) and SPA201-202 (Intermediate Spanish). These courses, while emphasizing spoken communication, also include the study of grammar, reading, and writing. On the other hand, those who merely want to learn how to speak Spanish for tourism, for use at work and in the community, or simply for personal enjoyment and enrichment, should consider taking SPA 103 and 104 (Basic Spoken Spanish). Advanced students may take Intro to Spanish Civilization and Literature (SPA 233) or courses in Latin American Civilization and Literature (SPA 271-272).
SPANISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES NVCC also offers courses for students who need to use Spanish for professional purposes, such as those working in the fields of health and/or law enforcement. Students may take SPA163-164 (Spanish for Health Professionals) and SPA 150 (Spanish for Law Enforcement). See the Schedule of Classes for current offerings.
SPANISH FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS
In response to the growing number of students who have grown up in a Spanish-speaking environment but need to improve their speaking skills, augment their vocabulary, and develop their reading and writing skills, NVCC offers a special course, SPA 205-206, entitled “Spanish for Heritage Speakers”. To find out if you are a “heritage speaker,”
contact Prof. Amanda Trostle at email@example.com or Prof. Eddy Arana at firstname.lastname@example.org".
