We offer courses at four levels of instruction. Click on the links below each description for current-semester course information.
- Level 2*--There are two required classes for this level: ESL 2 and ESL 14. ESL 2 students improve their overall language skills through intensive reading and writing. They read a novel and short stories in order to learn vocabulary and language structures. They write short compositions, summaries, and journals. In ESL 14, students improve their language fluency through oral and written activities.
- ESL Level 3*--There are 3 classes at this level: ESL 5, ESL 7, and ESL 11. In ESL 5, students develop reading strategies while reading a novel and articles, write responses and summaries, and learn vocabulary and word forms. In ESL 7, students develop oral skills through interviews, informal and formal speeches, and group discussions and reports. In ESL 11, students write compositions on personal and academic topics, fousing on the development of ideas, organization, and editing.
- ESL Level 4*--There are two classes at this level: ESL 6 and ESL 12. In ESL 6, students read novels and articles, write reponses and summaries, work with vocabulary in context, and conduct simple research. In ESL 12, students are introduced to academic essay format, learn to focus on developing a thesis, paragraph structure, convincing support, and editing skills. Beginning in Level 4, students may take select degree courses.
- ESL Level 5*--There are two classes at this level: ESL 17 and ESL 13. ESL 17 includes reading academic articles, novel analysis, research, vocabulary development, and summarizing skills. ESL 13 prepares students for ENG 111, College Composition. Students write essays of expanded length, learn research and citation techniques, and master academic formats and editing strategies.
