A
Brief Chronology of African American Literature. San Antonio
College provides a list of important texts and authors of African
American literature ranging from 1746-1990, plus a limited number
of links to biographical information. Although the compilation is
not exhaustive, it does provide those transitioning fom novice to
intermediate status a substantial reading list with which to continue
your journey.
American Writers
The
Academy of American Poets. This site has information about on-going
poetry events, biographies of poets, a collectioin of poetry, audios
of poets reading their own or others' poetry, and some good literary
links.
Kate
Chopin -- This site contains a collection of resources that
might enrich your understanding and enjoyment of Chopin's novel
The Awakening.
Emily
Dickinson -- This site contains biographical information about
the poet, as well as information about her family, home, and selected
poems.
William
Faulkner -- This site contains an extensive list of biographies,
critical works, and the often confusing genealogies of Faulkner's
fictional families. You will also find photos of the writer.
Herman
Melville -- A list of biographies and criticism, as well as
contemporary reviews of Melville's novels, appear on this site.
You will also find detailed accounts of the profits the writer made
(or failed to make) on his works.
Edith
Wharton -- this site contains sound recommendations about critical
works dealing with Edith Wharton's life and fiction. It has guidelines
to help with some of her most popular works--teachers' questions
and suggestions. For Wharton lovers, it also has a short quiz on
Wharton's major works. Photographs enhance the site, particularly
those from the recent exhibit at the national portrait gallery.
This is a good place to begin Wharton studies.
Walt
Whitman -- This site includes wonderful photographs of Whitman
as he passed through the stages of his life. (See the Whitman Gallery.)
There are engaging contemporary reviews of the poet's work, several
expressing outrage at his sensual poetry.
Richard
Wright -- This is the PBS page on the novelist. It has a list
of biographies and works of criticism devoted to Wright's fiction
and non-fiction, as well as a discussion of his film Native Son.

Christina
Rossetti -- This site contains biographical information, poetry,
and criticism about the poet. It also discusses the Early Pre-Raphaelite
Brotherhood.
Miscellaneous
Sites
The
Fellowship of Southern Writers. Do you know who's who in Southern
literature now? Most people don't; however, this site provides biographical
and critical information about contemporary Southern writers including--but
not limited to--the following: A. R. Ammons, James Dickey, William
Styron, Eudora Welty, Ernest Gaines, and Reynolds Price. The Fellowship,
established in 1987, meets every other year at the Conference on
Southern Literature, and the reigning elite of Southern Literature
always attend en mass.

-- This site is excellent for English 112 students or others who
are studying or who are simply interested in contemporary poetry.
The site collects poetry and interviews with poets published in
the Atlantic and includes an "audible anthology"
of poets reading their poetry.

Guide -- a student's guide to research, aimed at the first-year
composition student.
World
Literature
The
Classical World -- A guide to ancient world sources on the web,
mainly classical.
The
Gilgamesh -- This site, part of the Unversity of Chicago Oriental
Institute, uses the literary death of Gilgamesh as a tool in the
interpretation of archeological findings.
Iraq,
Egypt, Iran, and Sudan -- This site contains photographic archives
of archeological expeditions in Iraq, Egypt, Iran, and Sudan.
Literature
of Ancient Greece -- This site provides translations of Homer
and the tragic dramatists, historic overviews of ancient Greece,
maps, and links to archeological sites and to museum collections
of preserved art work.
The
Odyssey -- This site provides Chapman's translation of the The
Odyssey ( the first significant translation of the The Odyssey
into English). It uses the Roman names, for example Ulysses, not
Odysseus.
Trojan
War Art Work -- This site provides links inspired by the Trojan
War myth.
