Physical Education Program

The Physical Education Department at the Alexandria Campus offers classes in fitness, wellness, sports and dance. It also houses the Fitness Center, an exercise facility that is open to NOVA students, faculty and staff, 50 hours per week. The dance program is an active part of the Physical Education Department and includes the Kathy Harty Gray Dance Theatre in residency. Three dance performances per year are offered to the campus and community. These performances take place in the highly acclaimed Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall And Arts Center that resides next to the Tyler Building.

The curriculum offered by the Physical Education Department consists of classes that fulfill the requirements for degree granting programs as well as lifetime sports and activities.

Students are required to take the Lifetime Fitness and Wellness class, PED 116, for one or two credits. The remaining one credit needed for graduation can be taken from the following offerings: Aerobic Fitness or Aerobic Dance, Exercise and Nutrition, Yoga, Weight Training, Racquetball, Archery, Martial Arts, Fencing, Golf, Bowling, Ice Skating, Swimming, Skin and Scuba Diving, Modern Dance, Jazz, Ballet, Ballroom Dance and Downhill Skiing.

In addition, the Physical Education program offers a Fitness Career Studies Certificate with a curriculum of 10 - 12 credits designed to train students to work in the health and fitness industry.
