IT Services Announcement -
Final Network Change Is Complete: Must Logon To NVSTU in the Classroom
From: David B. Babel
Sent: Tuesday, May 20, 2008
The changes to the network are now complete. Instructors will no longer be able to log on to the NVCC domain in the classrooms. You must first log on to the NVSTU domain and then use the NVCC icon on the desktop to access your H: drive. You can log on to the NVCC domain via the NVCC icon, as illustrated here:
Below is a copy of the message sent in January and March. If you need assistance with logging on to the NVSTU domain from a classroom computer, try following the instructions below. If they do not work, please contact the IT Help Desk at 703 426-4141 for assistance.
Dear Colleagues,
Follow-up message to the Information Technology announcement sent on January 14, 2008
This message affects PCs running Windows only. This change affects how you login to each Instructor’s computer both in Single-Computer-Classrooms and the Instructor Computer in computer labs.
As of today, March 31, 2008, specific changes to be aware of:
- You will have to use a different LAN account/password/domain to log on to your respective instructor stations in Single-Computer-Classrooms and on the Instructor’s computer in each computer lab. See the examples below.
- The FACULTY/STAFF network (NVCC) and the STUDENT network (NVSTU) will be totally separate. A specific computer will only be able to log on to one network or the other, not both.
- The computers in your respective offices are on the FACULTY/STAFF network (NVCC) and you will continue to log on to them the same way.
All computers in Single-Computer-Classrooms and computer labs are on the STUDENT network (NVSTU) and you must log on to the instructor computer as follows:
- Your user ID for the NVSTU domain will be prefaced with a “fs” for FACULTY/STAFF. For example, if you are Robert Dessler your user ID on the STUDENT network (NVSTU) will be “fsrdessler”.
-
Your password the first time you log on to the STUDENT network (NVSTU) will be the same as your user ID. For example, Robert Dessler’s user ID on the STUDENT network (NVSTU) is fsrdessler His initial password on the STUDENT network is also fsrdessler.
-
The first time you log on in the new STUDENT network (NVSTU), you will have to create a new password. You can use the same password as you use on the FACULTY/STAFF network in your office.
- For example, Robert Dessler would be:
Name: fsrdessler or fsnvdessr (depending on your current logon ID)
Password: fsrdessler or fsnvdessr
Domain: NVSTU NVSTU
Change this default password at first logon à (you can change it to the same password you use on the FACULTY/STAFF network in your office). That will help avoid some confusion. Then, any time in the future that you have to change your password, you should make sure you change both passwords to the same thing.
When you log on to computers via the NVSTU domain, you will have full administrative privileges and will be able to load software.
When you log on to your computer at your desk via the NVCC domain, you will have user-level privileges and will not be able to load software.
Thank you for your attention to these mandatory changes. The security changes are required by VITA, the Commonwealth’s Information Technology Agency.
