The Partnerships Across Campus Program
Starting in Fall 2007, we are unveiling an exciting initiative titled: The Partnerships Across Campus Program (herein referred to as PACP). P.A.C.P. is a mentoring program which will match one faculty or staff member with an incoming student. Students will be matched with faculty mentors who shares similar interests. Typically, a mentor and their protégé should meet a minimum of one hour per week in the fall and on an “as needed” basis in the spring. Look out around campus for more details about the PACP.
Post-Election Conference at the Alexandria Campus
Northern Virginia Community College's Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center provided the setting for an anatomy of the 2006 Congressional elections. The December 12 seminar, jointly sponsored by the College, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), political analyst Charlie Cook and author-lecturer James Carville, dissected the results of the mid-term elections, which led to a change in party control of both houses of Congress.
NOVA President Robert Templin opened the conference at the 1,000-seat venue, drawing a comparison between open elections and community colleges.
“America’s community colleges, like our Congressional elections, are uniquely American institutions,” Templin said. “Essentially egalitarian in nature, our electoral process and our community colleges both offer opportunities for all our citizens irrespective of race, wealth, or power, to make a difference in the communities and the nation where they live.”
Panels of experts discussed the House and Senate elections, led by Rep. Davis and Cook, respectively; Carville moderated "What Happened and Why?", an overview featuring pollsters as panelists. Carville reinforced that notion, commenting that, just as Harvard is known for its post-presidential election conferences, “NOVA now should be known for its post-Congressional election conferences.”

AL Marks Start of Classes With Gifts, Recognition
At AL’s convocation, Acting Provost Jenny Graves wished faculty and staff a “Happy New Year,” lauded accomplishments, recognized promotions and retirements and outlined plans for the coming academic year. One highlight is the long-anticipated construction of Phase III—expected to get underway in October—with a gross square footage of 74,997. Provost Graves welcomed new hires and acknowledged honors won—among them Professor of Art Rebecca Kamen’s Pollack Krasner Foundation grant and Assistant Division Chair (Humanities and Social Sciences) Laura Franklin’s selection as chief presenter at the November satellite videoconference, “World Languages in the Community College: the Presidential Challenge”. In closing, the provost encouraged the Campus community to join in the festivities planned for the first days of the semester. Radio stations WMZQ 98.7 and HOT 99.5 provided music as students flocked to the big tent erected outside the Bisdorf building, where they found information on the Campus, toured the healthmobile (thank you, MEC!) and admired a restored 1964 Mustang (courtesy of Learning Resources Services Director Dave Williams). Faculty and staff manned tables scattered throughout the grounds and answered questions, gave directions and distributed Campus book bags.
