Directions for Visiting/Transient Students

Students currently enrolled at four-year colleges and universities may enroll in most NOVA courses without taking a placement test to determine readiness to do college-level work. Such “transient” or guest students maintain their primary enrollment with the four-year college or university (home institution) and elect to enroll at NOVA for the limited purpose of taking one or more classes. To qualify for this special provision, students must provide specified documentation showing current enrollment or admission to a four-year college or university.

Students must first apply to NOVA if they have not already done so: see “Apply for Admission” on the NOVA homepage: www.nvcc.edu. Students should answer “No” to the question “Do you plan to pursue a degree, certificate, or diploma.” In response to the request for a reason, they should select “Currently Pursuing a Degree at Another College.” Students should make careful note of the Customer ID (EMPLID) assigned to them at the end of the process.

In instances where the student wishes to register for an entry-level college course (i.e., a course that does not have a college-level prerequisite), he or she must provide one of the following for documentation:

  • An official or unofficial transcript from the four-year college/university.

  • An official letter or form from the four-year college/university stating the student has permission to take courses for transfer credit.

  • A letter from the four-year college/university stating that the student has been admitted and will matriculate for the Fall 2007 semester.

In instances where a student wishes to register for a course that has a college-level prerequisite (e.g., students taking ENG 112 must have completed ENG 111 or the equivalent), the student must provide documentation showing that he or she has met the NOVA prerequisite. The documentation required in this instance is one of the following:

  • An official or unofficial transcript from the four-year college/university.

  • An official letter or form from the four-year college/university stating that the student has successfully completed the prerequisite course.

Note: College-level prerequisites for all NOVA courses may be found in the Description of Courses section of the Northern Virginia Community College Catalog: www.nvcc.edu/catalog

Along with the documentation, students must submit a statement providing the following information:

  • Name of student

  • NOVA Customer ID (EMPLID)

  • Contact Information (mail address, email address, and phone number)

  • Four-year college or university currently attending or admitted to

  • Course(s) requested to take at NOVA and campus location

Students must submit the documentation and statement to the Counseling Center at the NOVA campus where they wish to take the courses(s). The documentation and statement may be submitted in person, mailed, faxed, or emailed to the addresses or numbers provided below.

Transient students taking advantage of this opportunity to register for NOVA classes are reminded of their responsibility to be fully ready to learn and perform at the level expected. If students wish further guidance about their readiness to take classes, they may wish to take the placement tests provided by the college. Doing so may be particularly appropriate for courses in mathematics, which assume very specific levels of current competence as specified in the Description of Courses. Students with questions about their readiness should discuss the matter with college counselors. Transient students accept responsibility for ascertaining whether the courses they take will be accepted by their home institution for transfer credit.
