VET 221 - ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICES III (4 CR.)

COURSE INFORMATION

Presents advanced clinical techniques commonly performed in the veterinary practice. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 6 hours. Total 8 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

To apply the concepts of veterinary laboratory techniques, surgical nursing, radiology, and anesthesia to a clinical setting. To introduce advanced techniques in veterinary technology.

ENTRY-LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Enrollment is limited to those students program placed in the veterinary technology curriculum and have satisfactorily completed VET 122.

COURSE OBJECTIVE/EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME

Under supervision of staff, the students work together as part of the veterinary medical care team. This includes patient presentation, laboratory evaluation, radiology, anesthesia, pre- and post-surgical preparation, and surgical assisting. Special techniques will be presented by staff and guest lecturers.

MAJOR TOPICS TO BE COVERED

a. Practical application of techniques, previously learned in laboratory techniques, surgery, patient care, anesthesia, and radiology.

b. Patient presentation and record keeping.

c. Surgical assisting and pre- and post-operative patient care.

d. Special demonstrations of advanced techniques in veterinary technology presented by staff and guest lecturers.
