Studies drugs and other medical substances of veterinary importance including characteristics, usage, measurements, dosage, administration and pharmacy management. Lecture 2 hours per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
This course is designed to give the veterinary technology student knowledge of the various aspects of pharmacology and pharmacy management as applied in clinical veterinary practice.
Enrollment is limited to those students programmed placed in the Veterinary Technology Program or students with special approval from Veterinary Technology Program Head.
COURSE OBJECTIVE/EDUCATIONAL OUTCOME
b. The student will learn therapeutic principles, routes of administration, contraindications and adverse reactions of major classes of drugs.
c. The student will learn weight and measurements of metric and English systems and conversion between the systems.
d. The student will learn to calculate dosages, prepare labels and dispense medications.
e. The student will learn the basic concepts of pharmacy management, including inventory control, ordering of drugs and supplies, and storage and shelving of therapeutic agents.
f. The student will become familiar with the use of the computer in pharmacy management.
g. The student will learn the laws applying to controlled substances and the proper procedures for ordering, dispensing, administration, storage and record keeping of scheduled drugs.
h. The student will be able to explain and/or demonstrate administration of medication to clients and communicate to clients important information concerning medication.
b. Routes of administration of drugs - the metabolism and excretion from the body.
c. Common adverse reactions, side effects and contraindications of various pharmaceuticals.
d. Calculating dosages, preparation, labeling and dispensing of medications.
e. Management of veterinary hospital pharmacy including ordering of drugs, inventory, storage and shelving procedures.
f. Procedures for handling controlled substances.
g. Communication with clients concerning administration and properties of pharmaceuticals.
