COURSE DESCRIPTION

Emphasizes the spoken language, stressing fluency and correctness of structure, pronunciation, vocabulary and sociolinguistic appropriateness are evident. Lecture 3 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

This course provides practice for simple face-to-face conversations in informal settings and a limited number of transactional situations handling most survival situations encountered while traveling or residing for a short time in a Hispanic culture.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

The prerequisite for this course is SPA 102 - "Beginning Spanish II" or equivalent.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. initiate and respond to simple statements
2. maintain a simple face-to-face conversation handling every day social encounters
3. narrate and describe in present, past, and future time frames
4. ask and answer questions and carry on a conversation on topics related primarily to self and immediate environment
5. string sentences together and sustain ideas using simple paragraph discourse
6. be understood without difficulty by native speakers used to dealing with non-native speakers

1. Everyday social encounters, e.g., greetings, leave-takings, use of polite formulas
2. Handle simple transactions, e.g. hotel, restaurant, post office, bank, drugstore
3. Autobiographical information
4. Leisure time activities
5. Daily routines at home, school, workplace
6. Descriptions about people places and things
7. Narrations about past, present, and future activities
8. Reports on events
9. Current events on factual information
