RTH 131 - RESPIRATORY CARE THEORY AND PROCEDURES I (4 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Presents theory of equipment and procedures used for patients requiring general and critical cardiopulmonary care. Lecture 3 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 6 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The purpose of this course is to introduce respiratory care instrumentation and therapeutic procedures. It is offered in the first semester of the program and is designed for the beginning student.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

This is an entry-level course; therefore, there are no competencies or prerequisites required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. relate specific gas laws and physical principles to pulmonary physiology and respiratory therapy instrumentation

B. explain the principles of and demonstrate the use of medical gas storage and delivery systems

C. explain the principles of and demonstrate the uses of hyperinflation therapies

D. explain the principles of and demonstrate the use of the humidity and aerosol and generators

E. explain the principles of and demonstrate the use of the pressure-cycled ventilators

F. explain the principles of and demonstrate the use of the low flow and high flow oxygen administration devices
