PED 116 - FITNESS
AND WELLNESS (1 CR.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Studies fitness and
wellness and how they relate to a healthy lifestyle. Defines fitness and
wellness, evaluates the student's level of fitness and wellness, and motivates
the student to incorporate physical fitness and wellness into daily living.
Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 1 hour. Total 2 hours per week.
GENERAL PURPOSE
The student will understand
and apply the principles involved in promoting and maintaining total wellness
and physical fitness.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of
this course, the student will be able to:
A. demonstrate
an understanding of the physiological benefits of movement, physical activity,
and wellness
B. define principles
involved in increasing and maintaining physical fitness
C. evaluate and apply
fitness and wellness concepts to individual lifestyle
D. participate in
movement and wellness activities
MAJOR TOPIC TO BE INCLUDED
A. Fitness:
principles, benefits, evaluations
B. Fitness Components:
flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance,
body composition
C. Weight Management:
weight gain and loss, strategies for change, eating disorders, metabolism
D. Nutrition: food
and diet analysis, basic nutrients, body's use of fuel
E. Stress Management:
the body's physiological reactions, relaxation techniques
F. Injury Prevention:
exercise injury, body mechanics
G. Cardiovascular
Disease: risk factors, prevention, intervention
