HIT 231 - HEALTH
RECORD APPLICATIONS I (3 CR.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Uses an integrated
approach to practicing health records skills in a simulated clinical environment.
Emphasizes the use of the microcomputer in accomplishing problem solving
tasks. Laboratory 6 hours per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
The purpose of this
course is to prepare the medical record technology student to competently

perform all routine functions
inherent in a medical record department

cope with day to day supervisory
responsibilities

communicate to hospital
and departmental personnel new developments in medical record practice

recognize the ethical
responsibilities inherent in the role of medical record technician.
This course allows the

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES
Successful completion
of HIT 100, 113, 114, or permission of instructor.
COURSE OBJECTIVES

Using a recognized Word
processing software package, accurately transcribe 15 medical reports following
correct format.

Using procedures established
by the instructor correctly respond specified number of requests for health
information.

Correctly analyze general
medical/surgical, obstetrical and newborn records according to four different
hospital discharge analysis procedures. A minimum of 40 records must be
completed at an acceptable competency level.

Given hypothetical situations
and a hospital suspension policy, correctly determine which physicians
should be suspended and complete the necessary forms.

Given hypothetical situations
and a hospital suspension policy involving suspension list problems, correctly
ascertain the correct course of action in each situation.

Appreciate the importance
of the discharge analysis function in terms of legal and educational implications
and good patient care.

Respect the confidential
nature of the information in the medical record.
