HIT 225 - QUALITY
ASSURANCE IN HEALTH CARE (2 CR.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Presents medical care
evaluation techniques, utilization review activities, peer review organization
requirements, and risk management. Lecture 2 hours per week.
GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE
This course is designed
to give the student an introduction to the broad topic of quality management
in the health care environment. Special emphasis is placed on developing
analytical skills for performance improvement and utilization review activities.
ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES
Prerequisite is HIT
215 - "Health Data Classification Systems". Concurrent enrollment in HIT
220 - "Health Statistics" or permission of instructor.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of
the course, the student should be able to:

gain an understanding
of the theory and methodology of a hospital-based quality management program

gain an understanding
of the structure and function of a Peer Review Organization

understand the role of
the health information technician in relationship to the medical staff
committee structure

gain practice in preparing
reports and statistical displays for medical care evaluation

gain practice in performing
concurrent review in accordance with federal regulations
