DNH 114 - HEAD & NECK ANATOMY (2 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Studies the anatomy and physiology of the major structures of the head and neck, including landmarks, bones, muscles, nerves, blood supply, glands, temporomandibular joint, and other organs. Lecture 2 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

A study of the anatomy and physiology of the structures of the head and neck.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Successful completion of one semester of the dental hygiene program.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Specific objectives for each classroom presentation will be presented prior to each lecture period. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. locate, identify, and describe the gross anatomy of the external and internal aspects of the head and neck
    2. relate human anatomy and physiology to oral health, disease and clinical procedures
    3. identify and state the functions of the muscles responsible for facial expression, mastication, movement of the tongue and the oropharyngeal system
    4. describe and discuss the innervation of the muscles of mastication
    5. identify the cranial nerves and discuss their function
    6. discuss the innervation of the muscles of mastication, salivary glands, maxillary and mandibular teeth, tongue, and gingiva
    7. locate and trace the major arteries and veins of the head and neck with emphasis on the blood supply to the extra- and intra-oral structures
    8. describe the anatomical structures of the temporomandibular joint and its role in the positions and movements of the mandible
    9. identify and state the function of the superficial and deep lymph nodes, the tonsils, thyroid, and major and minor salivary glands of the head and neck
    10. discuss the physiology of digestion, salivation, mastication, taste, and deglutition
    11. explain the significance of trigeminal nerve and peripheral sensory mechanisms
