ART 100 - ART APPRECIATION (3 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces art from prehistoric times to the present day. Describe architectural styles, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and painting techniques. Lecture 3 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

ART 100 is geared for the non-art major and can be taken separately from the art history sequence of ART 101-102. ART 100 can also be a companion course for the ART 101-102 sequence providing an overview of and preparation for the study of the history of art.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

No prerequisites required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. discuss aesthetic qualities, basic materials, and techniques of works of art
  2. discuss major artists and artistic movements in a cultural and historical context
  3. identify a few important works of art by the significant artistic developments they represent
Whenever possible emphasis will be placed on works which may be seen locally.

MAJOR TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED

ART 100 presents an introductory survey highlighting major artists and artistic developments in world culture. The approach can be chronological or thematic with special emphasis given to art terms and the media and techniques of the visual arts. The principles of art and the functions of design will be discussed as well as the cultural and social forces at work in the development of art. The underlying purpose of this course is to assist the student in developing an appreciation of man's creative impulse as it has been expressed through our heritage of the visual arts.
