ADJ 245 - MANAGEMENT OF CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES (3 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Describes management options and operational implications for staffing, security, safety, and treatment. Considers impact of changes in public policy on corrections. Lecture 3 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with detailed knowledge of the concepts, techniques, and problems in the management and operations of adult and juvenile correctional facilities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student should have a detailed knowledge of the concepts, techniques, and problems in the management of adult and juvenile correctional facilities.

MAJOR TOPICS TO BE INCLUDED

    1. History and development of correctional facilities
    2. Role of correctional facilities in the criminal justice system
    3. Role of the administrative staff, the correctional officer, and the program staff, including qualifications and training
    4. Profile of the typical inmate
    5. Concepts and problems in the management and operation of a correctional facility, e.g., legal, political, financing, etc
    6. Efforts, approaches, and techniques in the development and implementation of treatment programs
    7. Routine and special services for inmates
    8. Evaluation of correctional facilities
    9. Future trends in the operation and management of correctional facilities
