COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills and emphasizes basic German sentence structures. Lecture 5 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

Students learn to function in the language within a limited context of vocabulary and structures. The course includes a general introduction to culture.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Functional fluency in English.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. understand simple spoken German within the limited context presented to beginners
2. speak simple German with correct pronunciation at normal conversational speed
3. read the German the student has already learned to comprehend and speak (Introduction to reading selections in rearrangements and recombination of words and expressions already encountered.)
4. write accurately what he/she has learned to understand, say, and read

The student will learn the structure of the German language in a prescribed sequence beginning with the simplest structures and working toward the more complex. Students learn correct German pronunciation.
