FRE 102 - BEGINNING FRENCH II (5 CR.)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills and emphasizes basic French sentence structure. Lecture 5 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

Beginning French, a basic introductory course, places emphasis on the development of proficiency in the following skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Students learn to function in the language within a limited context of vocabulary and structure. The course also includes a general introduction to culture.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCY

The prerequisite for this course is FRE 101 - "Beginning French I" or equivalent.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

    1. Listening

      2. The student will also understand content referring to basic personal background and needs, social conventions and routine tasks, such as getting meals and receiving simple instructions and directions. Students will understand face-to-face conversations, as well as audio and videotapes adapted for their use, although repetition and rewording may be necessary.
       
    2. Speaking

      3. The student will be able to ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements and maintain face-to-face conversations, although with frequent errors.

      Within these limitations, the student can perform such tasks as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases. The student will have a vocabulary adequate to express basic needs. The student may exhibit strong interference from the native language.
       

    3. Reading

      4. The student will read and understand messages with social purposes or information for a wide audience, such as public announcements and short straightforward instructions dealing with public life.
       
    4. Writing

      5. The student's writing in the following areas can be understood by natives accustomed to the writing of non-natives:
1. write short messages and postcards
  • take simple notes, such as telephone messages
  • create statements and questions recombining learned vocabulary and structures on familiar topics
    •      MAJOR TOPICS TO BE COVERED

    The student will learn the structure of the French language in a prescribed sequence beginning with the simplest structures and working toward the more complex. Students learn correct French pronunciation.
