COURSE DESCRIPTION

Offers intensive practice in comprehending and speaking Chinese, with emphasis on developing structure and fluency. Lecture 4 hours per week.

GENERAL COURSE PURPOSE

The purpose of Intermediate Chinese is to enable the student to become more proficient in speaking and understanding spoken and written Chinese in a greater variety of situations. The student earns the more complex structures of the language and at different levels of diction. He learns to read and write without recourse to translation.

ENTRY LEVEL COMPETENCIES

Prerequisites for CHI 201 is CHI 102.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

1. maintain and improve oral competence
2. develop reading and writing skills
3. increase the knowledge of Chinese structures
4. learn different levels of diction
5. introduce more complex grammatical structures
6. introduce levels of diction above the elementary
7. expand spoken and written vocabulary including idiomatic expressions
8. introduce authentic texts from a variety of contents
9. provide opportunities for conversation in Chinese
10. develop writing skills through short compositions on a range of topics
11. develop cultural awareness
