Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Transfer Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship program enables community college students with exceptional promise and demonstrated financial need to pursue a baccalaureate degree. Students in any discipline may apply.

The award provides funding for tuition, room and board, required fees and books for the remainder of the scholar’s undergraduate degree. Scholarship amounts vary depending upon the individuals costs at the institution he or she attends as well as other grants or scholarships the individual may receive. Awards can be as much as $30,000 per year.

Georgetown Preferred Consideration Program for Community Colleges

This program invites each participating college to recommend two or three strong candidates interested in continuing their studies at Georgetown University. These students may be non-traditional, but they should show promise of being able to compete at a demanding academic institution.

They must have compiled a strong academic record in a program similar to the kind that students undertake during their first two years at Georgetown. Since some of our programs have very specific requirements, an appropriate selection of courses during the first two years would be essential for a student to transfer easily and to achieve a degree at Georgetown. Overall, the Admissions Committee looks for students with strong academic promise who will thrive in a demanding academic environment.

National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS)

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is the honor society for high achieving first- and second-year college students, who are in the top 20 percent of their class with a 3.6 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale. NSCS is recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. NSCS has more than 600,000 lifetime members from 245 university recognized on-campus chapters in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Campus chapters are student-run organizations with oversight from an on-campus advisor affiliated with the university and dedicated NSCS staff members.

The NSCS Community College Program was founded in 2009 on the Northern Virginia Community College campus in Annandale, Va., and the Hillsborough Community College campus in Tampa, Fla. The NSCS Community College Program was established to create a meaningful community college experience; provide two-year students with a network of members (two-year, four-year and online), faculty and administration, and recruitment partners; offer a unique and robust package of membership benefits to high achieving two-year students; and bridge the gap between two- and four-year institutions.

NSCS is the ONLY interdisciplinary honor society that offers membership to students from both two-year AND four-year institutions. This allows two-year members to take advantage of their NSCS membership throughout the entire transition process so that they may transfer membership into the chapter on their four-year campus and be engaged in an organization on their four-year campus immediately upon transferring.

Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society that has been recognized for academic excellence since 1918. With 1,100 chapters throughout the world and 1.3 million members, it is a prestigious organization whose members comprise the top 10 percent of students enrolled in two-year colleges. ΦΘΚ members receive benefits ranging from program opportunities to more than $36 million in transfer scholarships.

The utility of membership extends beyond the academic world. Intelligent, hard-working and reliable -- these are the traits of members, and businesses look for these qualities in job applicants. Membership in serves as evidence of your achievements. If you are considering membership, the eligibility requirements state that you must have completed 12 hours of course work leading to an associate degree and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. If you meet these requirements, you may apply to enjoy the privileges of membership.

Sigma Chi Eta Communication Honor Society

In the Fall 2007 semester NOVA established the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi Eta, the National Communication Association’s society for two-year colleges. Students completing 9 credit hours in Communication Studies and/or Theater with a 3.25 and an overall GPA of 3.0 are eligible for membership. We hold an induction ceremony each spring for membership. Various events are also held throughout the year across our campuses.

Sigma Delta Mu (Alpha de Virginia)

Sigma Delta Mu had its foundation in Sigma Delta Pi, the nation’s largest honor society in the field of foreign language. It was formed in 1979 by Dr. T. Earl Hamilton, who served as its first president. As members of Sigma Delta Mu Alpha de Virginia, our mission is in line with the National Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Mu. 

Sigma Delta Mu's purpose is:

  • To honor men and women who strive for and attain excellence in the study of Spanish and in the knowledge of the literature and culture of Spanish-speaking people,
  • To honor those who work to make known to English-speaking peoples the Hispanic contributions to world cultures,
  • To promote a greater interest and understanding among college students of Hispanic culture and
  • To foster friendly relations and mutual respect between Spanish-speaking and English-speaking peoples.

The founders of Sigma Delta Mu Alpha de Virginia: Noupreet Bajwa, Yerin Lee, Chloe Listman, Betty Michel, Phillip Quiñones, and faculty sponsor Dr. Alicia de la Torre Falzon, are honored to be part of a program which fosters interest and achievement in the Spanish language and culture. Our goal is to make our students more aware of Sigma Delta Mu and enrich their lives by experiencing Hispanic culture. Knowledge beyond the English-speaking world is a rewarding experience which everyone should have the opportunity to take part. We highly encourage students to inquire about Sigma Delta Mu Alpha de Virginia, and we welcome new members. As an active and ambitious society, we have set high standards for ourselves. Through our sense of community, we create events centered on Hispanic culture for all to enjoy.

Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges

Students who have excelled academically and have participated in leadership and/or community service activities are nominated for the National Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges recognition program. A banquet is held for the nominees of all six NOVA campuses in April of each year.

Outstanding Faculty Awards

outstanding faculty awards logoThe Outstanding Faculty Awards are the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities. These awards recognize superior accomplishments in teaching, research and public service.


Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence

vccs logoThe purpose of the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence is to recognize excellence in teaching in Virginia’s community colleges. The Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence is awarded annually to one teaching faculty member in the VCCS who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS college(s). The award provides the recipient with a VCCS stole and $5,000. One nomination per campus will be accepted.


The Chancellor's Faculty Fellowship Program

vccs logoThe purpose of the Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship is to ensure that capable people within the VCCS have opportunities to prepare themselves for top-level management and instructional positions within the VCCS.

This can be accomplished by earning two types of doctoral degrees: community college leadership/higher education degrees or discipline-based degrees. To support this goal, the Chancellor's Faculty Fellowship provides up to a one-year leave of absence, with shared financial support for doctoral study at six institutions of higher education: (1) the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia; (2) the Community College Program Area at Virginia Tech; (3) the National Center for Community College Education at George Mason University; (4) the School of Education at the College of William and Mary; (5)Virginia Commonwealth University; and 6) Old Dominion University.

In addition, faculty may apply for a VCCS Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship to attend regionally accredited universities/colleges that do not provide shared financial support.


Chancellor's Commonwealth Professors Program

vccs logoThe Chancellor's Commonwealth Professorship program was established in 1989 to recognize and support teaching excellence in the VCCS. Up to three individuals may be designated Chancellor's Commonwealth Professors each year. Each individual so designated shall retain the title for a two-year term. 

Each Chancellor's Commonwealth Professor shall receive funding for reimbursable expenses and stipends for two summers to help support the individual's self-directed project. Chancellor's Commonwealth Professors shall also receive reassigned time equivalent to two courses (normally six semester hours) each year during the regular academic year in order to pursue their self-directed projects.


Educational Foundation Outstanding Service to the College Award

Each year the NVCC Educational Foundation sponsors an award program to recognize Outstanding Employee service.

The College Awards Committee administers the process. This year there are four separate categories of recognition:

  • Full Time Teaching Faculty - maximum of three awards,
  • Classified Staff - maximum of three awards,
  • Non-Teaching Faculty (counselor, librarian, administrator, instructional technologist) - maximum of one award, and
  • Adjunct Faculty - maximum of one award.

Alumni Federation – Faculty of the Year

alumni federation logoEvery year the NOVA Alumni Federation sponsors the Faculty of the Year Award. The selection for this award is based on written essay nominations from alumni and current students. Nominees for the award must demonstrate outstanding mastery of academic discipline, and commitment to the intellectual growth and development of students. If you know of a faculty member who deserves this recognition, please complete the Faculty of the Year Nomination Form.


Presidential Sabbatical Award

nova logo The President's Sabbatical Award will allow a maximum of three faculty members, one of whom can be on a 12-month contract, to receive a semester of leave with full pay.


Professor Emeritus and President Emeritus (page 167, section 6.9900)

nova logoIn accordance with the VCCS Policy Manual, to be eligible for the rank of professor emeritus, an individual holding faculty rank (usually that of associate professor or professor) must have retired from Northern Virginia Community College after a minimum of five years full-time service to the College, a minimum of 10 years of service in the Virginia Community College System and must have made meritorious and significant contributions to the College. Please refer to Section 6.9900 in the 2010 Faculty Handbook.
