Student Profile - Sheila Sealey
I was 40 years old when I made the decision to go back to school. I was really apprehensive at first about returning because I didn’t know if I would be able to handle the workload. I had no idea about what to expect. Since starting at NOVA, all of my worries have gone away. This place has really impressed me and I love the learning process.
I came to the Alexandria Campus in the Spring of 2011. I’m currently studying social work under the liberal arts degree. What I like most about my major is that I get the opportunity to learn about people and work to find ways to help them improve their lives.
All of the faculty members who I’ve come in contact with have taken part in guiding me down a positive path, especially my developmental writing professor. He has been the main reason for my success as a student. He’s given me many opportunities to improve myself as a person, which has opened doors for my future. Working with this professor helped me secure a position on the board of directors for the Women’s Center and through this opportunity I was able to get to know Dr. Jill Biden, who’s become a very positive role model in my life.
I’ve had a great experience at NOVA so far. Students who are thinking about coming here should know that their passion for their goals is what will make them successful in life. Don’t be discouraged by bumps in life along the way.
