Paula Worthington

I’m a big believer in the value of community colleges. I came to NOVA as a student, and for the past 10 years, I’ve been teaching courses through the Extended Learning Institute.

The flexibility of ELI courses allows busy students to do more with their time. A majority of my students work full-time jobs, have children or have some sort of family issue. I take all of these reasons into consideration when I am teaching. I’m not too strict and I find that’s helpful because I receive comments from students who say that they wouldn’t have been able to finish the course if they didn’t have flexibility.

My biggest piece of advice for prospective students is to have a goal. Come prepared with an academic plan. I think it’s important to meet with your advisor and lay out your academic career goals from the beginning. Take advantage of what the College has to offer. NOVA provides a variety of resources to help our students succeed.
