1. What is my lan id?
All faculty are provided with LAN (Local Area Network) accounts that allow them access to campus computer workstations and email. All computers on all NVCC campuses present you with a 3 line logon box requesting a User ID, a Password, and a Domain.

Your User ID is created using the first letter of your first name followed by your last name up to a total of 12 letters. 

Ex: Joe Brown =jbrown

If your name is similar to that of another faculty member, your User ID might be created using the first two letters of your first name followed by your last name up to a total of 12 letters. If your first and last names are similar to those of another faculty member, your User ID might be created with a numbering system.

Ex: Joe Brown = jbrown ; Jay Brown = jabrown ; Jane Brown = jabrown1

2. How do I login? What if I cannot login?
Turn the computer on. The computer should boot to the login screen. Enter in your userid and password; the domain should be set to nvadm. After three unsuccessful login attempts, your account will be locked. Follow The Reset your Password Directions to unlock your account and/or reset your password.

3. What is the password policy? 
First timer users must call the Help Desk. At your first logon, you will be required to choose a new password using the following format:

  • Passwords must be at least eight characters long.
  • Passwords may not contain your user name or any part of your full name.
  • Passwords must contain characters from at least three of the following four classes: 
Description Examples
English upper case letters A, B, C, ... Z
English lower case letters a, b, c, ... z
Numerals 0, 1, 2, ... 9
Non-alphanumeric ("special characters") %7e@#$%^&*()_+


Users are required to change the password every 42 days. Userids and passwords should be kept confidential and not shared among faculty/staff members.

4. How do I map a drive?
a. Right click on the "My Computer" icon
b. Select "Map Network Drive"
c. Pull down and select the letter of the Drive you wish to map
d. Type in the path to the drive (e.g. "\\ansrvr0\jdoe" or "\\novaweb\jdoe"). User will need to provide the path or information about what the mapped drive is mapping to (e.g. personal folder, division folder, personal web folder, etc.)
e. Check the "Reconnect at Logon" box
f. Click "OK"
g. Double click on the "My Computer" icon
h. The drive letter you mapped should be displayed. Double click on it to display its contents. 

5. I'm a new employee and I would like access to the network and email?
New employees must fill out form 105-45. This form is available from your division secretary. Once it has been filled out, have the secretary fax it to (703) 323-2319. We will contact you once the access has been granted. Check your campus mailbox. If you do not hear from us within3 days, call the IT Help Desk. 

6. I'm switching campuses or divisions. What needs to be done?
Fill out form 105-45 and submit it to your division secretary.
