College Senate

The College Senate:

  • serves as an instrument for the formulation and expression of faculty, student and staff points of view, generally reserving its deliberations for major questions that are important to the faculty, the student body, the staff and the institution as a whole;
  • forms its opinions on any subject relevant to the College's interests and makes suggestions or recommendations to the appropriate College committee, officer or Campus Council for further consideration;
  • advises and seeks advice from the President of the College and initiates policy recommendations in all areas of College activity;
  • provides an alternate channel to all College constituencies for appeal, influence, and recommendation to the President;
  • submits advice, counsel, and recommendations to the NOVA Board through & by the College President;
  • encourages the development and maintenance of a beneficial climate for excellence in teaching and learning within a framework of academic freedom and professional responsibility and ethics; and
  • establishes its own standing and special committees to deal with specific issues; nominates representatives for appointment to College standing committees; and elects members to College Forum committees.
