Author Percival Everett
7:00 pm - Theatre |
There might not be a more fertile mind in American fiction today than Percival Everett’s. In 22 years, he has written 19 books, including a farcical Western, a savage satire of the publishing industry, a children’s story spoofing counting books, retellings of the Greek myths of Medea and Dionysus, and a philosophical tract narrated by a four-year-old.
Everett’s writing has earned him the PEN USA 2006 Literary Award (for his 2005 novel, Wounded), the Academy Award for Literature of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award (for his 2001 novel, Erasure), the PEN/Oakland-Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature (for his 1996 story collection, Big Picture) and the New American Writing Award (for his 1990 novel, Zulus). He has served as a judge for, among others, the 1997 National Book Award for fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1991. (http://www.usc.edu/about/people/everett.html) |

The NoVa Woodbridge Theatre Group Presents Four One-Act Plays Exploring the Concept of
"Stranger Shores"
8:00 pm - Theatre |
“Riders to the Sea” could be considered one of the world’s only successful one-act tragedies. Written by John Millington Synge, of the Irish Renaissance of early 20th-century, the play deals with desolation, isolation, alienation, and the tragic toll taken by the sea surrounding a small fishing island. |
“Impromptu,” Tad Mosel’s on-stage drama, contrasts four characters who are indeed in search of a director, a writer, a guide to help them muddle through the ‘business’ of life. |
“The Indian Wants the Bronx” is Israel Horowitz’s exploration of the strangeness of the stranger, the danger of belonging and alienation, and the real fear of the unknown. |
“The Still Alarm” has us laugh at George S. Kaufman’s cool-as-a-cumber characters caught in a cacophonous conflagration. |
$10 General Admission; $5 students, faculty/staff, seniors, children
