This conference promises to be stimulating and transformational, as ECCSSA invites participants to explore new paradigms
and evaluate existing ones as we explore together topics, research, policy and strategies we can use in teaching and
professional practice as we educate students and the community about the importance of preparing for a sustainable future.
This year's conference will be held at Northern Virginia Community College in the Washington, DC metropolitan area
and will draw on many of the resources and institutions focusing on the conference theme.
This should be an informative conference as we call for the participation and input from many professionals
and resource institutions to join us in dialogue as we address the conference theme.

Conference Overview
Over the past few years, the membership and Board of Trustees of the Eastern Community College Social Science Association (ECCSSA) has addressed transformational issues on the role of the social sciences in information sharing, building a global and world community, curricula development, tolerance and humanity, and transformations toward peace building and resolve. This year, we continue exploration of our role as professionals and social scientists in the conveyance of perspectives and knowledge in higher education to the students and communities we serve.
The 2009 35th Annual ECCSSA Conference will focus on visionary paradigms to prepare and lead us into the future to ensure the survival of succeeding generations so they may have a future worth living. The issues of concern are some of the following: ways to encourage sustainability and change; peacemaking practices; strategies for conflict resolution; community involvement; cross-curricula themes; shared universal responsibility and understanding; mechanisms for public education; the creation of global systems for collective intelligence; the necessity of cooperation; the establishment of international order; the role of world religions, the creation of zones of peace; the delineation and discussion of shared ethical values; and, the building of national,
cross-cultural and international understanding. This includes a discussion of implications for discipline-related instruction, research, policy and professional development.
ECCSSA recognizes the need, to assist students and communities to achieve success, become future leaders, and create and maintain positive, healthy and sustainable communities in a future world at peace. The transformative power of widespread systemic education and change can improve lives, communities, the nation and world.
ECCSSA calls for visionary and innovative perspectives from the world community of scholars in all areas of the social sciences and related pedagogy and research. We hope this exploration and dialogue will contribute to the current ongoing efforts to lead humanity through the structural, educational, cultural and behavioral transformations necessary to sustain and support future generations in our nation and the world community.
ECCSSA invites interested professionals and social scientists to join us in dialogue. The call for proposals includes submission of proposals for presentation of papers and research, panel discussions, roundtables and posters.

Special Call for Student Papers and Presentations
The 2009 ECCSSA conference calls for student papers and other presentations including posters, paper and digital portfolios, web sites, and models. These student projects may be developed independently, in conjunction with a class assignment, or under instructor supervision.
ECCSSA strongly recommends Association members and teaching faculty encourage student participation in the conference. Student participants will have the opportunity to dialogue with conference participants about their work. Exemplary student presentations will be recognized.
