Nokia Only Planet: Chile 2007
Designs for a global society by NOVA students
February 18 - March 14, 2008

NOVA's Communication Design faculty and students were invited this year to participate in the Nokia Only Planet project with DuocUC, a leader in design education, in Santiago, Chile. Working in small teams, students conceptualized, designed and developed new multimedia devices that reflected the influence of local trends and benefited from new emerging technologies that would theoretically be introduced in 2010.

The project was initiated in May of 2007 and culminated in a trip to Santiago for 9 students and 3 faculty members the week of November 5th, 2007. The Only Planet project provided students a unique opportunity to discover new dimensions in graphic and industrial design as well as allow them to explore elements of their own cultures as expressions of identity. The innovative, interdisciplinary project provided the tools to construct a holistic view by combining inspiration from global societal trends with local design and cultural elements.

Final multimedia presentations and product prototypes were created by each NOVA group and exhibited during the week of November 5, 2007. In addition, NOVA students' work was shown to Axel Meyer, Group Design Director for Multimedia Nokia Design, and presented to Carlos Hinrichsen, the Director of Duoc's Design School, along with graphic and industrial design professors.

This unique opportunity provided NOVA faculty and students a vehicle to foster to foster a multi-cultural international exchange of ideas and learning through hands-on work, teaching and dialogue. Building on NOVA's international institutional relationships and commitment to global learning, the project afforded students and faculty a unique opportunity to understand perspectives from other cultures and intensify the exchange of creative concepts.

This exhibit will showcase each group's completed presentation and prototype, and will include a photo retrospective of the visit to Chile.
