Michael Gessner
Recent Works, sculpture
September 25 - October 20, 2006

Michael Gessner is an artist who creates sculptural works, hanging and free-standing, from small and medium sizes up to large-scale installations. The works are done with organic materials, primarily wood, using carving and construction techniques. Following this material, Gessner continues to expand his exploration of grain, that mysterious and infinitely variable current of structure running through wood, connecting the present and future to the primeval past. "I try to give the viewer a new perspective on nature through the rearrangement of natural forms into an altered format. The beautiful strange forms of nature and the frequently bizarre arrangements of chance are inspirational to me."

"Gessner works mostly with organic materials, primarily wood, in a restrained and precise manner that is evocative of a dancer's grace. Rather than impose his will upon the materials he channels their natural energy allowing it to tell its own story and create its own mood."
.(Stuart Greenwell, Washington Review of the Arts, December-January 1999-2000)

Currently showing at Concepto Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, Gessner has been, for the past three years, showing regularly at Gallery K in Washington, DC. He has shown extensively in many other venues for the past 20 years, including DC Arts Center, Fondo del Sol Visual Arts and Media Center, Washington, D.C.; Nexus Gallery, Philadelphia; Zone Publique, Montreal, Canada; PASS and Ruthless Grip, Washington.
