(ISBN:780470279878) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Biology 141 (Human A & P) is the first course of the Bio 141- 142
course sequence that is designed for students who require 8 credits of
a science course with a laboratory and for those students who plan to enter
the medical and related fields.
EVALUATING YOUR PROGRESS: 1. LECTURE REQUIREMENTS: 600 points
(75% of the grade) NOTE: A make up for any missed test WILL ONLY BE GIVEN to those students with a VALID EXCUSE, i.e., Doctor's note with the physician's name and phone number. The make up quiz must be taken within a week of the exam's date. One lowest lecture grade is dropped at the end of the semester. 2. LAB EXAMINATIONS AND REGULATIONS:

points. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR LAB COATS, SPLASH PROOF GOGGLES, AND SURGICAL GLOVES DURING THE WET LABS. For Safety in the laboratory, YOU MUST AVOID WEARING FLIP FLOPS OR OPEN TOED SHOES IN THE LAB. ANY STUDENT WHO FAILS TO FOLLOW THE RULES IN THE LAB WILL BE ASKED NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LAB ACTIVITY AND IS CONSIDERED ABSENT FOR THAT LAB SESSION.
STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CLEAR AND CLEAN THE LAB BENCH BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE CLASS FOR THE DAY. FAILURE TO PROPERLY CLEANING THE LAB BENCH 5 POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM ALL STUDENTS IN THE GROUP. 3. *LAB ACTIVITIES: 25 points will be added to the lab scores (OPTIONAL). To earn 25 points, the assigned lab activities of the lab manual must be completed during the lab period if time allows. The unfinished work must be completed at home. Incomplete work WILL NOT EARN partial points. 4. *Presentation : Potential 20 Points will be added to the lecture scores (OPTIONAL) Students may earn up to 20 points by giving a 5-10 minutes presentation of any topic covered in this semester i.e., human anatomical or physiological disorders, issues on human diseases caused by viruses, bacteria or other microorganisms, impact of environment, drugs, and nutrition on human health, etc. You may use the web or other resources to select a subject. You must submit a written summary of the subject on the day of the presentation and include the sources or the references. Students need to see me to confirm the desired presentation subject and schedule. The presentation requirements must be met to earn extra points. Please consult the student handbook for details. If you are pregnant, please see me as soon as possible. I will explain the potential chemical hazards in the lab. ATTENDANCE: All students are required to attend both lecture and lab classes. If you must miss a class you are required to inform me in advance. Students with perfect attendance and participation in both lecture and lab may earn complementary points (no more than 5 points) at the end of the semester. Late arrivals are excluded from this option. If you miss a lecture or a lab session, you are responsible to retrieve all the missed information or handouts from your class mates.
BEING
ABSENT FOR EACH LAB RESULTS IN LOSS OF
5 POINTS. The Deadline for Withdrawal Without Grade Penalty or Change to Audit Is NOV 02/09. Failure to withdraw administratively will result in an "F". CLASS DISRUPTION: Any disruption of classroom activities including talking, using derogatory words and improper behavior will result in an immediate dismissal from class and loss of 50 points per occurrence. Three dismissals for any one student will result in an "F" for the class. CELL PHONE USAGE AND TEXT MESSAGING ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE CLASS ROOM. FOR EMERGENCY PURPOSES ACTIVATE THE VIBRATING MODE ON YOUR CELL PHONES. ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE PUT AWAY IN YOUR BOOK BAGS DURING EXAMINATIONS.
